The Global Vatican
Author: Francis Rooney
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1442248815
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 333
Book Description
From the centuries-long prejudices against Catholics in America, to the efforts of Fascism, Communism and modern terrorist organizations to “break the cross and spill the wine,” this book brings to life the Catholic Church’s role in world history, particularly in the realm of diplomacy. Former U.S. ambassador to the Holy See Francis Rooney provides a comprehensive guide to the remarkable path the Vatican has navigated to the present day, and a first-person account of what that path looks and feels like from an American diplomat whose experience lent him the ultimate insider’s perspective. Part memoir, part historical lesson, The Global Vatican captures the braided nature of religious and political power and the complexities, battles, and future prospects for the relationship between the Holy See and the United States as both face challenges old and new. Updated now to include a view towards Pope Francis’ first trip to the United States, The Global Vatican looks forward to the revitalization of the Church in this newest global papacy.

God's Diplomats
Author: Victor Gaetan
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1538184672
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 483
Book Description
[God’s Diplomats is] a mix of impartial description and informed opinion. Not everyone will agree with how different issues are framed, or how different figures are portrayed. But what certainly cannot be argued with is the fact that Gaetan has given a gift not only to foreign policy practitioners, but also to American Catholics. You will not find a book on Church diplomacy as accessible, comprehensive, and faithful, as God’s Diplomats. It is a must read for anyone interested in understanding the Vatican’s diplomatic priorities better — and especially why they don’t always align with America’s. ― National Catholic Register Using inside sources and extensive field reporting about the secretive, high-stakes world of international diplomacy, Vatican reporter Victor Gaetan takes readers to the Holy See to explicate Pope Francis's diplomacy, show why it works, and to offer readers a startling contrast to the dangerous inadequacies of recent U.S. international decisions.

The Holy See, Social Justice, and International Trade Law
Author: Rev. Dr. Alphonsus Ihuoma
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 154624445X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 475
Book Description
The Holy See, Social Justice, and International Trade Law: Assessing the Social Mission of the Catholic Church in the GATT-WTO System highlights the uniqueness of the Catholic Church as the foremost institution in the world that can confront issues in world trade that affect the common good. The distinguished author Rev. Dr. Alphonsus Ihuoma provides a superbly broad and deep examination that is both scholarly and practical of the mission of the Catholic Church in the world as one that centers on the temporal and eternal needs of humanity. His discussion treats thoughtfully the mediatory role of the church in world affairs and argues persuasively that the church has been engaged in this role since its very beginning, even before nations embraced organized politics two thousand years ago. This remarkable book is a great tool for any reader seeking to know more about the unique position of the church in world affairs, especially in the GATT-WTO system. The book rightly lauds the churchs achievements in history. But it equally and rightly argues that the church must do more to address present challenges in the world trading system. Readers will be enlightened by the treatment of the failures of the GATT-WTO system in pursing the objectives for which it was established, the churchs efforts to pursue vital related objectives, and the need for her to do more.

The Independence of the Holy See
Author: Cardinal Manning
Publisher: CreateSpace

Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 178
Book Description
Henry Edward Cardinal Manning wrote this in 1877 after the Catholic Church had been despoiled of all of her possessions and the Pope had become the prisoner of the Vatican. The need for the Pope to be free not only spiritually, but also politically is laid out very well by Cardinal Manning. In fact, this independence is essential to world peace.Cardinal Manning says: “All Christians believe that when our Lord sent out His Apostles, He gave to them a supreme spiritual power to govern the Church. Catholics further believe that He had already given that power in its fulness to Peter, their head and chief, the foundation of His Church; and, after He ascended into Heaven, His Vicar upon earth. We believe also that this Divine power exists in the world at this moment. It exists in the office of Peter, perpetuated in the person of his successor.”“My purpose then will be to make clear the four following points: First, What is the sovereignty or independence, or temporal power, if men like so to call it, with which God in His Providence has invested the Head of His Church upon earth. Secondly, What is the violation of that independence and sovereignty by the acts of violence which have been perpetrated in the last seven years. Thirdly, What have been and what must be the consequences of that violation. And, lastly, What is, therefore, the duty of every Catholic throughout the world. And I will go further: I will say, What is the duty of every Christian who believes that the Word of God is supreme over all human law, and that the authority of the Christian Church on earth is independent of all civil government. And in this I shall appeal to the multitudes of upright Christian hearts in these three kingdoms, who, though they be separated from us by, I am sorry to say, many points of faith, by more, I fear, than points, by many wide distances, which I would fain see closed up, nevertheless do openly, manfully, and justly defend the liberty of the truth and of the Church of God in the sense in which they understand it.This sovereignty I cannot better explain than in these two sentences-It is the dependence of the Head of the Church upon God alone; and his consequent independence of any human authority. These two sentences include the whole subject. Now, we often hear it said, and I have heard it said within these last days, that "in the beginning the Head of the Church, or the Bishop of Rome, as men call him, had no temporal power. Why should he have now what he had not then?" Secondly, they say "He was subject to the Roman Emperors then; why can he not be subject to any civil power now?" Thirdly, they ask, "If it had been the will of God to give him a sovereignty of his own~ He would have done so; but, if He did, as you affirm, then He has taken it away." Now, these are three common objections. There is a fourth, indeed, which I may mention in passing only to dismiss it. They say, "If the temporal power be essential to the spiritual, how was it that for so many centuries the Popes exercised their spiritual power without it?"
