"MANETs are coping with major challenges such as the lack of infrastructure and mobility which causes networks topology to change dynamically. Due to limited resources, nodes have to collaborate and rely packets on the behalf of neighbors to reach their destinations forming multi-hop paths. The selection and maintenance of multi-hop paths is a challenging task as their stability and availability depend on the mobility of participating nodes, where paths used a few moments earlier would be rendered invalid due to ever changing topology. The purpose of a routing protocol is to establish and select valid paths between communicating nodes and repair or remove invalid ones. As mobility rate increases, routing protocols spend more time in path maintenance and less time in actual data communication, degrading network performance. This interaction among mobility, topology and routing performance is usually empirically studied through simulations. This dissertation will provide a novel deep analytical study of the root cause of performance degradation with mobility. This is accomplished by, firstly, studying how mobility impacts durations of topology paths called Topological modeling. Secondly, analyzing how routing protocols adapt to topology changes in Adaptability modeling which identifies AdaptationDelays representing the time taken by a routing protocol to translate a change in topology to logical information used in path selection. Combining the results from these two studies, performance models of routing protocols are obtained, which later is used to optimize its operation. This study is applied on two tree-based proactive routing protocols, the Optimized Link State Routing and the Multi-Meshed Tree."--Abstract.

Recent advances in low-power technologies have resulted in the proliferation of inexpensive handheld mobile computing devices. Soon, just like the Internet empowered a whole new world of applications for personal computers, the development and deployment of robust ubiquitous wireless networks will enable many new and excitingfuturistic applications. Certain to be an important part of this future is a class of networks known as "mobile ad hoc networks." Mobile ad hoc networks (or simply"ad hoc networks") are local-area networks formed "on the spot" between collocated wireless devices. These devices self-organize by sharing information with their neigh-bors to establish communication pathways whenever and wherever they are. For adhoc networks to succeed, however, new protocols must be developed that are capable of adapting to their dynamic nature. Inthis dissertation, we present a number of adaptive protocols that are designed for this purpose. We investigate new link layer mechanisms that dynamically monitor and adapt to changes in link quality, including a protocol that uses common control messages to form a tight feedback control loop for adaptation of the link data rate to best match the channel conditions perceived by the receiver. We also investigate routing protocols that adapt route selection according to network characteristics. In particular, we present two on-demand routing protocols that are designed to take advantage of the presence of multirate links. We then investigate the performance of TCP, showing how communication outages caused by link failures and routing delays can be very detrimental to its performance. In response, we present a solution to this problem that uses explicit feedback messages from the link layer about link failures to adapt TCP's behavior. Finally, we show how link failures in heterogeneous networks containing links with widely varying bandwidth and delay can cause repeated "modal" changes in capacity that TCP is slow to detect. We then present a modifed version of TCP that is capable of more rapidly detecting and adapting to these changes.

Thus to deliver message from source to destination or to have per-to-peer communication it not only requires a route establishment but also to ensure minimum delay. we attempt to analyze various delays involving in packet transmission with mathematical formulation and conditions subjected to certain assumption .This mathematical modeling proves to be sufficient to answer the QoS demands like finding the path with minimum delay among the available paths from source to destination, taking into consideration the route parameters like geographic distance and data rate. Another application is the packetizing (or) packet/cell framing to utilize other paths whose data rates may be degraded, this increase the utility and efficiency of overall network. Minimum delay routing protocol (MDRP) can also be used to determine the routes having same delay though they may differ in terms of geographical distances and data rates. Such approach will efficient in multimedia transmission over parallel links with minimum delay jitters. Various critical situations have been solved using proposed techniques as examples to validate the protocol.

This algorithm predicts the link availability time and even before the link breaks; either it repairs the route locally or sends information to the source nodes to enable them to initiate a new route search well in time. This algorithm improves the quality of service of the network. Simulation results show that AODV routing algorithm with link availability model performs better than the existing AODV. Advances in wireless technology and hand-held computing devices have brought revolution in the area of mobile communication. The increasing mobility of humans across the globe generated demand for infrastructure-less and quickly deployable mobile networks. Such networks are referred to as Mobile Adhoc Networks (MANET). Usually, nodes in a MANET also act as a router while being is free to roam while communicating each others. Adhoc networks are suited for use in situations where infrastructure is unavailable or to deploy one is not cost-effective. Frequent changes in network topology due to mobility and limited battery power of the mobile devices are the key challenges in the adhoc networks. The depletion of power source may cause early unavailability of nodes and thus links in the network. The mobility of nodes will also causes frequent routes breaks and adversely affects the required performance for the applications. Availability of a route in future mainly depends on the availability of links between the nodes forming the route. Therefore, it is important to predict the future availability of a link that is currently available. We have proposed an analytical model for link prediction using Newton divided difference method. This link availability algorithm is incorporated in AODV routing algorithm (AODVLP) to evaluate the performance of AODV routing protocol using the metrics viz. delivery rate, average end-to-end delay, average RTS collisions per node and route failure. In the existing AODV protocol, packets are routed until a link in the existing path fails. This results in degradation of quality of service of network in terms of end-to-end delay and delivery ratio.
