The Resurrection of Anne Hutchinson

The Resurrection of Anne Hutchinson PDF Author: Robert H. Rimmer
Publisher: Prometheus Books
ISBN: 1615927913
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 426

Book Description
What would a man do if he were suddenly visited by someone who had lived three hundred and fifty years ago? Someone he had "adopted" as his spiritual ancestor? Someone whom he had fantasized about, dreamed about, written about? Someone who, although she could not be X-rayed or photographed, was real enough to make love to, and who returned his affection with a vibrancy and lustfulness that made him sure that she was real and not just a spirit? When Anne Hutchinson, the first American religious dissenter and feminist, showed up on Bob Rimmer's doorstep, he was at first skeptical but soon succumbed to Anne's earthy charms. "The Resurrection of Anne Hutchinson" is the story of two weeks in 1985, when a woman who was banished from Massachusetts in 1638 came back to preach her ideas of freedom in love, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The irrepressible Robert Rimmer, author of "The Harrad Experiment," brings Anne Hutchinson back to life in modern-day Massachusetts, where she takes on the people and the government of a repressed United States in a way similar to her original attack on Boston in the seventeenth century. Her companion on a cross-country tour is Bob Rimmer, who embarks with her on a crusade to reach the American public with Anne's message of "repent and rebel." Rimmer's use of the available literature on Anne (from the diaries of the governor who banished her, John Winthrop, and from Anne's trials) is brilliantly used to evoke seventeenth-century America in a way no history book ever could.

Divine Film Comedies

Divine Film Comedies PDF Author: Terry Lindvall
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317353412
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
Divine Film Comedies creates a meaningful dialogue between stories in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament and comedies spanning the history of film. The text lies at the intersection of three disciplines: humor/comedy studies, film studies, and theology. Drawing on films from the silent era to the 21st century, the book highlights parallels between comedic sub-genres and sacred narratives, parables, and proverbs, illuminating a path to seeing and understanding both Scripture and film through a comic lens. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of theology and film, media, and communications.

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 142

Book Description
In 1893, Reverend Shigefusa Kanda, a graduate of Doshisha Theological School, came to Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii as a missionary to Japanese immigrants on the plantation. He built a church, founded the first Japanese language school in Hawaii, and defended the rights of the Japanese laborers. In 1898 he married Sue Tanimura. They moved to Wailuku, Maui where, in 1911, they founded a unique boarding school, the Kanda Home, for unfortunate Japanese girls. As described in this book, Mrs. Kanda vigorously educated these children to become good U.S. citizens and Christians, despite encountering considerable social and financial hardship. Graduates of the Kanda Home became leaders in the Japanese community and have contributed to the development of modern Hawaii.

Richard Devane SJ

Richard Devane SJ PDF Author: Martin Walsh
Publisher: Messenger Publications
ISBN: 1788121295
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 177

Book Description
A controversial figure in his time, and perhaps even more so today, Richard Devane SJ (1876–1951) was a thorn in the side of the governments of W T Cosgrave and Eamon de Valera. He is remembered equally as a defender of the conscience of the new Irish republic and as a sometimes over-zealous gatekeeper of Irish culture and morals. In Richard Devane SJ: Social Commentator and Advocate Martin Walsh takes on the task of placing Devane in context: not only the context of his time, that of the birth of the Irish Republic, but of our time – a time of widespread change in Irish culture that can make the Ireland of Devane’s day look like another island. For better or worse, Walsh argues, Devane’s fierce commitment to nurturing a new Ireland made him a major force in creating the country we know today. If we want to understand the Ireland that passed referenda on gay marriage and abortion in 2015 and 2018 respectively, we need to understand – and not forget or dismiss – the world the Irish people were responding to: Devane’s world and Devane’s Ireland. An advocate of censorship, a committed anti-communist, founder of the Irish Film Institute and sparring partner of Brian O’Nolan (Flann O’Brien, Myles na gCopaleen) in Richard Devane SJ: Social Commentator and Advocate, Martin Walsh brings this controversial figure to life ensuring he will be the subject of discussion in Irish circles for years to come.
