Book Description
"The story of a man's effort to break down the hostility of a girl, and to defeat the unscrupulous craft which endangers her." -The Bookman "In 'The Hundredth Chance,' Ethel M. Dell has written a strong novel, which points a good moral by the questionable means now so much in vogue. The machinery of the plot is the detestable 'triangle,' as it has been called. Circumstances hurry an unhappy girl into a loveless marriage. A good but ill-suited and tactless husband and a former suitor, rejected because unworthy, but still loved, combine to wring the soul of the wife with gloom and temptation. An unnatural mother urges her to fling propriety and morality to the winds. She resists and finally achieves legitimate happiness." -America "As is usually the case with a book by Miss Dell, the character work is the significant part of 'The Hundredth Chance.' The novelty comes in the character of the husband, who, as a horse trainer, mated to a girl of gentle blood, proves himself every inch a gentleman, while her aristocratic suitor - the man of her own class - proves himself to be a beast. The way in which the fortunes of the girl, the nobleman, the horse trainer and the girl's crippled brother are worked out proves Miss Dell a master fiction writer. That she can play upon our emotions through the predicament and the tenderness of the crude husband for his wife's afflicted brother, is further proof that the author is sure of her appeal to the imagination and the feelings of her readers. The book has more of the melodramatic than has heretofore been found in Ethel Dell's books." -Book News "Another choice specimen by a popular girls' author is 'The Hundredth Chance' by Ethel Dell. The book consists of over 550 pages. The first 150 are occupied in explaining the situation which leads a proud young society girl to marry a man who is a gentleman by nature but a horse-trainer by profession; the next 400 tell a sordid story of his efforts to win his wife's love, efforts that are thwarted partly by her pride and partly by the intrigues of a rich and titled scoundrel, intrigues which frequently come too near succeeding to be pleasant reading; while the final twenty pages relate the sensational rescue by the wife of her husband's favorite horse, and the tardy but complete triumph of love." -Journal of Social Hygiene
