External Fixators of the Foot and Ankle

External Fixators of the Foot and Ankle PDF Author: Paul Cooper
Publisher: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins
ISBN: 1469824892
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 800

Book Description
External fixation has proven a valuable tool in the effort to correct deformities, improve healing of fractures, and improve outcomes of orthopedic surgery. This expertly constructed reference, External Fixators of the Foot and Ankle, explores the ways in which external fixators are used to reduce tissue damage, reduce strain on nerves and vasculature, and improve healing in the surgical treatment of foot and ankle deformities and injuries. Authoritative perspectives from leading orthopedic and podiatric surgeons help to build an understanding and strengthen your technique. The multidisciplinary team approach in treating complex trauma, reconstructive, or diabetic patients is emphasized throughout this textbook. Detailed coverage of the tools of external fixation describes the roles, applications, and limitations of the various rings, rods, wires, pins, and designs used in external fixation. How-to, step-by-step instruction addresses a range of fixation procedures, helping readers understand the relevant anatomy and avoid potential complications. Abundant illustrations highlight the text, providing a surgeon’s eye view of a range of commonly performed procedures.

Book Description
External fixation is now being used widely to maintain fractures, osteo tomies, and arthrodeses in a desired position during consolidation. Whereas external fixation has been readily accepted in European countries, its use has weathered a rather stormy course in North America, especially in the treatment of fractures. Only recently has external fixation found its rightful place on this continent as well. Many different models are on the market today, and the practitioner is faced with a difficult decision in selecting a model. Should he buy a system where the fracture has to be reduced first, or should he work with a device permitting a reduction after insertion of the pins? To enable surgeons to study the different systems, to discuss their advantages and disadvantages, and to permit them to put their hands on these devices and inspect them personally, the Division of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Ottawa organized an applied basic science course in May 1981, External Fixation of Fractures. During this course, all major systems were pre sented to the participants. As happened during the course "Internal Fixation of Fractures" held two years ago, the rigidity of internal fixation was frequently and intensively debated. Whereas the rigidity of internal fixation cannot be altered during the course of healing, the rigidity of external fixation can be changed. In fact, with progression of union, rods of increasing elasticity can be used.

The External Fixator

The External Fixator PDF Author: B.G. Weber
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642700152
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 571

Book Description
Professor B.G. WEBER has once again and in a very timely fashion produced a superb book on an orthopaedic subject of great importance. "The Extemal Fixator" is the most comprehensive text on the subject in orthopaedic literature to date. Professor WEBER thoroughly discusses extemal fixation with c1arity, organization, profuse illustrations and roentgenograms. Professor WEBER acknowledges that the use of extemal fixation in orthopaedic surgery is not newand traces its history over the years. He points out c1early the fact that though at various times the "method" has experienced periods of disrepute, modem sophistication, improved technology and a better understanding of its philosophy have given the system a newand perhaps permanent place in the armamentarium of the orthopaedic surgeon. All methods of treatment have critics as well as supporters, and not infrequently the strongest criticisms are the result of poor understanding of the philosophy proposed and its proper implementation. Professor WEBER, in his carefully detailed and well illustrated book, has made it abundantly c1ear that the use of extemal fixators in the treatment of fractures must be c1early understood by the orthopaedic surgeon in order to obtain satisfactory clinical results. His discussion of its philosophy, pathomechanics and technology are most comprehensive and leave "no stone untumed" and because of this the book represents a most comprehensive text on the subject.
