Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Roxbury Town Another volume will complete the history of the Town, down to the date of the City Charter. The object has been, in this, to give the Early History. But no distinct line of division can be drawn. Much matter has necessarily been reserved for the appendix which will be added to the second part. The plan of the work has been, in order to secure for it the only merits such an one can ever have, accuracy and completeness. The materials that exist for gaining these ends are so much scattered, they are so often found where no one could have supposed they existed, that no diligence could ferret them out; but they are gladly furnished when it is known that use can be made of them. Since the last pages of the manuscript were sent to press, I have to acknowledge the receipt of several valuable communications. Any such is a great favor. It is my hope that all who can procure me access to materials that will aid in completing or correcting the account of the Town, will do so, so that the ends of this work will be secured. Roslindale
Author: Anthony Mitchell Sammarco
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738512457
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 102
Book Description
Once referred to as the "Suburb Superb," Roslindale was at one time part of the town of West Roxbury, which had been set off from Roxbury in 1851. The rapid development of Roslindale, which was annexed to the city of Boston in 1874 and was then known as the South Street District, was largely due to the Boston and Providence Railroad and the streetcars that connected the area to Forest Hills Station. By the twentieth century, Roslindale had developed as a distinctive neighborhood that attracted residents of all walks of life, with dells and valleys reminiscent of Roslin, Scotland, from which it received its name. Roslindale chronicles the growth of this neighborhood from the birth of photography through today by combining vintage images with modern photographs of Roslindale Square, Washington Street, and noteworthy buildings and businesses.

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 498
Book Description
Excerpt from The Town of Roxbury: Its Memorable Persons and Places, Its History and Antiquities, With Numerous Illustrations of Its Old Landmarks and Noted Personages Roxbury was appropriately so named from its most prominent natural characteristic; and no one who venerates its founders, or who cherishes a proper regard for the preservation of its historical or ancestral memories, should ever consent to substitute for it a name no more applicable to it than to many other localities now in cluded within the city limits. To do so is no less a blunder in taste than in fact. The great city of London, while gradually absorbing adjoining localities, religiously preserves their ancient names. Are ours less dear to us? Let us, then, while a single rock remains above its surface, cling to the good old name of roxbury, scotched, not killed, by the temporary substitution for it of the unacceptable misnomer of Boston Highlands. Stamped from the Beginning
Author: Ibram X. Kendi
Publisher: Bold Type Books
ISBN: 1568584644
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 594
Book Description
The National Book Award winning history of how racist ideas were created, spread, and deeply rooted in American society. Some Americans insist that we're living in a post-racial society. But racist thought is not just alive and well in America -- it is more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. And as award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi argues, racist ideas have a long and lingering history, one in which nearly every great American thinker is complicit. In this deeply researched and fast-moving narrative, Kendi chronicles the entire story of anti-black racist ideas and their staggering power over the course of American history. He uses the life stories of five major American intellectuals to drive this history: Puritan minister Cotton Mather, Thomas Jefferson, abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, W.E.B. Du Bois, and legendary activist Angela Davis. As Kendi shows, racist ideas did not arise from ignorance or hatred. They were created to justify and rationalize deeply entrenched discriminatory policies and the nation's racial inequities. In shedding light on this history, Stamped from the Beginning offers us the tools we need to expose racist thinking. In the process, he gives us reason to hope.

Book Description
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Robert F. As Studs Terkel remarked, it's "gripping, indelible...a truth about all large American cities." "An epic of American city life...a story of such hypnotic specificity that we re-experience all the shades of hope and anger, pity and fear that living anywhere in late 20th-century America has inevitably provoked." —Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times
