Book Description
Excerpt from The History of France, Vol. 7 Confidence ought to proceed from below, and power to act from above, declared the appointed legislator of the 18th Brumaire. He himself compared his political system to a pyramid, resting on the entire mass of the nation, terminating at the top in a single man, whom he called the Great Elector. He had not the courage to pronounce the word king. Five millions of electors, constituted into primary assem blies, were to prepare a municipal list of elected, who in their turn were intrusted with the formation of a depart mental list of names. To these twice sifted delegates was confided the care of electing 5000 as a national list, alone capable of becoming the agents of executive power in the whole of France. The municipal and departmental administra tions were to be chosen by authority from their respective lists. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of France, Vol. 1 That such a nation should have failed to find a competent En glish historian is strange, and the fact, I presume, is to be ascribed, not to the insular prejudices of English authors, among whom we naturally seek for one (for they have written of particular periods in the French annals both learnedly and well), but to the probable familiarity of the English reading public with the French histo rians themselves, whose labors, to those that' can read them, ren der any other attempts not only unnecessary, but presumptuous. But, if this may have been the case in England, it is certain that in this. Country, where we have no such general acquaintance with French literature, we need a history of France in the English lan guage. Now, as my studies had gradually led me over the whole field of French history, I came to conceive that I might perhaps turn the materials and the knowledge I had collected to some ao count in supplying this need. I will frankly confess, however, that the magnitude of the project frightened me for a long time from Preface to his History of France in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of France, Vol. 1 His book was in the press before anyone dreamt that we should be standing beside our traditional enemy on the very battlefields where we have so often confronted her. No alterations have been made to meet the new conditions: history can never be wholly free from bias, but a history of France written or revised during such a crisis as the present would be so biassed as to lose its value. I may, however, be allowed to say how conscious I am that I have overstated the temperamental characteristics, and in particular the temperamental weaknesses, of the French. The truly remarkable way in which, under the present trial, France has purified herself of her traditional vices and developed virtues which were supposed to be quite alien to her character drives one to the conclusion, not only that the temperamental qualities of nations change more rapidly than we have been accustomed to think, but also that they are often only qualities which have been foisted on nations by noisy minorities. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of France, Vol. 1 of 5 Some five-and-twenty years ago, the Author of these present volumes wrote for Dr. Lardner's Cabinet Cyclopaedia a Compendious History of France. The space there assigned for the work did not render the careful consultation of original sources requisite. It has ever since been his, aim, and more or less the object of his study and thought, to write a History of France from the ample original materials which the care of the French Government and learned bodies have collected, and which so many of their able historic pllllosophei's have elucidated. The First Volume of a History of France, thus composed, is now presented to the public. Although no original narrative or document of these times has been left unconsulted by the Author, he has still refrained from multiplying references at the bottom of each page. The materials of French history, or at least of its earlier centuries, have been formed into collections, for the most part in chronological order. Each volume is amply furnished with indexes and tables of contents. And nothing can be more easy than for the student to refer to any epoch, test any opinion, or A 4viii preface. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of France, Vol. 3 Hitherto, however, the revolution has been treated as the spectre, and considered beyond the pole of humanity. The imagination alone has seized upon its prominent horrors. Even those, who have deigned to seek for a cause, have found it in some collateral or subordinate circumstance. Phi losophy in the opinion of some, the duke of Orleans or Pitt in that of others, prepared and brought about the great os tastrophe; whilst others again are satisfied to cast the entire blame on the fickleness and cruelty of man born upon the French soil. Scarcely has a distinction been made betwixt the revolution and its excesses. Freedom itself has been ih cluded in the general stigma, and made answerable for that mass of guilt and folly, which its enemies were mainly ih fluential in producing. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of France, Vol. 2 It is not always just, however, to condemn a country for its loss of liberty. Representative fi'eedom, that great political result of modern times, was as little the effect of human providence, as the great physical discoveries that have con tributed with it to change the face of civilization. Had not England preserved the boon more by a devoted attachment to old institutions than by any legislative' skill, it is to be feared that not even all our modern ingenuity could have invented a durable constitution. If the French, then, are to be blamed, it is more for fickleness than servility; and even this censure will be rendered lighter by considering the causes that led to the different fate of liberty in the two countries.
