The second volume covers the period from 1850 to 1865; the third volume, the period from 1865 to 1885. In the United States, phrenology shaped the production of medico-legal knowledge around crime, the treatment of the criminal within prisons and in public discourse, and sociocultural expectations about the causes of crime.
