These farms were called plantations and their owners were called planters. The father of George Washington, whose name was Augustine Washing ton, owned a large plantation at Bridge's Creek, on the Potomac, in West moreland County, Va. Here he lived with his wife, Mary, in a comfortable, plain, old-fashioned Southern home with sloping roof, broad eaves, a big chimney, and a broad veranda in front.
