Mummy Portraits in the J. Paul Getty Museum

Mummy Portraits in the J. Paul Getty Museum PDF Author: David L. Thompson
Publisher: Getty Publications
ISBN: 0892360380
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 76

Book Description
These extraordinary Egyptian images produced from Julio-Claudian times through the age of Constantine (the first four centuries A.D.), seem often to have been commissioned while the subject was still alive and displayed in the home. At death, the portrait was inserted into the deceased’s mummy wrappings. Thirteen mummy portraits from the Getty Museum’s collection are catalogued in this text by Dr. David Thompson, professor of Classics at Howard University. Placing the works in the context of other so-called Fayum paintings, Dr. Thompson examines their importance as portraits and identifies the hands of individual painters. Numerous illustrations accompany his discussion.

Mummy Portraits of Roman Egypt

Mummy Portraits of Roman Egypt PDF Author: Marie Svoboda
Publisher: Getty Publications
ISBN: 1606066536
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 413

Book Description
This publication presents fascinating new findings on ancient Romano-Egyptian funerary portraits preserved in international collections. Once interred with mummified remains, nearly a thousand funerary portraits from Roman Egypt survive today in museums around the world, bringing viewers face-to-face with people who lived two thousand years ago. Until recently, few of these paintings had undergone in-depth study to determine by whom they were made and how. An international collaboration known as APPEAR (Ancient Panel Paintings: Examination, Analysis, and Research) was launched in 2013 to promote the study of these objects and to gather scientific and historical findings into a shared database. The first phase of the project was marked with a two-day conference at the Getty Villa. Conservators, scientists, and curators presented new research on topics such as provenance and collecting, comparisons of works across institutions, and scientific studies of pigments, binders, and supports. The papers and posters from the conference are collected in this publication, which offers the most up-to-date information available about these fascinating remnants of the ancient world. The free online edition of this open-access publication is available at www.getty.edu/publications/mummyportraits/ and includes zoomable illustrations and graphs. Also available are free PDF, EPUB, and Kindle/MOBI downloads of the book.

Book Description
The Fayum portraits were created by the people of a flourishing district of Roman Egypt during the first three centuries AD. In the old Egyptian tradition, these people embalmed the bodies of their dead, but then they placed over the mummy, a painted portrait to preserve the memory of each individual. Over 1000 portraits have so far been discovered of men, women and children.

Encyclopedia of Greece and the Hellenic Tradition

Encyclopedia of Greece and the Hellenic Tradition PDF Author: Graham Speake
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135942137
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 2407

Book Description
Hellenism is the living culture of the Greek-speaking peoples and has a continuing history of more than 3,500 years. The Encyclopedia of Greece and the Hellenic Tradition contains approximately 900 entries devoted to people, places, periods, events, and themes, examining every aspect of that culture from the Bronze Age to the present day. The focus throughout is on the Greeks themselves, and the continuities within their own cultural tradition. Language and religion are perhaps the most obvious vehicles of continuity; but there have been many others--law, taxation, gardens, music, magic, education, shipping, and countless other elements have all played their part in maintaining this unique culture. Today, Greek arts have blossomed again; Greece has taken its place in the European Union; Greeks control a substantial proportion of the world's merchant marine; and Greek communities in the United States, Australia, and South Africa have carried the Hellenic tradition throughout the world. This is the first reference work to embrace all aspects of that tradition in every period of its existence.

These portraits, like the papyri lately become famous, were all found in the district now known as the Fayum, the extensive oasis fertilized by a branch of the Nile with its numerous channels, which lies beyond the Libyan mountain range on the west of the great Nile Valley, a stretch of pasture and orchard land between 29° and 30° north latitude. A branch line of railway, dividing from the main line to Upper Egypt at Wasta, now runs through the heart of the province, which is famous for the production of sugar cane, vegetables. Histories of Egyptology

Histories of Egyptology PDF Author: William Carruthers
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135014574
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 298

Book Description
Histories of Egyptology are increasingly of interest: to Egyptologists, archaeologists, historians, and others. Yet, particularly as Egypt undergoes a contested process of political redefinition, how do we write these histories, and what (or who) are they for? This volume addresses a variety of important themes, the historical involvement of Egyptology with the political sphere, the manner in which the discipline stakes out its professional territory, the ways in which practitioners represent Egyptological knowledge, and the relationship of this knowledge to the public sphere. Histories of Egyptology provides the basis to understand how Egyptologists constructed their discipline. Yet the volume also demonstrates how they construct ancient Egypt, and how that construction interacts with much wider concerns: of society, and of the making of the modern world.

The Archaeology of Race

The Archaeology of Race PDF Author: Debbie Challis
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1472502205
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
How much was archaeology founded on prejudice? The Archaeology of Race explores the application of racial theory to interpret the past in Britain during the late Victorian and Edwardian period. It investigates how material culture from ancient Egypt and Greece was used to validate the construction of racial hierarchies. Specifically focusing on Francis Galton's ideas around inheritance and race, it explores how the Egyptologist Flinders Petrie applied these in his work in Egypt and in his political beliefs. It examines the professional networks formed by societies, such as the Anthropological Institute, and their widespread use of eugenic ideas in analysing society. Archaeology of Race draws on archives and objects from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology and the Galton collection at UCL. These collections are used to explore anti-Semitism, skull collecting, New Race theory and physiognomy. These collections give insight into the relationship between Galton and Petrie and place their ideas in historical context.
