The Gospel as Conversation
Author: James Boyd White
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1621898598
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 242
Book Description
How are we to read the Gospels and bring them into our lives? The idea of this book is that the Gospels are not merely rules for life, or stories illustrating moral lessons, or statements of theological doctrine, but invitations to thought and conversation. The Gospels are full of problems, uncertainties, and tensions; these difficulties call upon us to engage with the Gospels in a new way: to read them, to ask questions about them, to live with them, alone and together. The way we do that is by a kind of conversation, with each other, or within ourselves. The Gospel as Conversation is meant to engage the reader in the conversation by which the Gospels maintain their life today among us. It contains Gospel passages, sermons given on those passages, and questions for reflection. It is intended both for individual readers and for groups in adult education classes.

Book Description
The landscape photographed and the reflections on the sites of the Sunday Gospels paint a geography little changed since the time of Jesus and his followers. To see the Judean Wilderness or the River Jordan or the hills of Jerusalem is to see the topography, the land features that existed two thousand years ago. And in seeing them we are reminded that this is what Jesus saw. The dust and heat are the reality of his day and time as much as they are ours. To encounter that land if only through word and image is to touch the world of Jesus.

The Puzzle of the Gospels
Author: Peter Vardy
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317454995
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 186
Book Description
First Published in 2015. The gospels tell a story. There are many types of story ranging from fiction through biographies to attempts at historical accounts. Even so-called 'true' stories will be affected by the perception of the writer. It is impossible to present any book without taking the viewpoint of the author into account - which is one reason why this book will be devoting considerable time to understanding the purpose and intention of the individual gospel writers. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John present different accounts of the life and death of Jesus of Nazareth, as one might expect from four people who, although they use some common material, nevertheless present this material in distinctive ways. This book will be concerned with helping you, the reader, to understand the gospel stories and how they came to be written; to bring to light the implicit references that were being made of which modern readers may be unaware; and also to consider the issue of the truth of the stories.

Jesus of the Gospels
Author: Arthur E. Zannoni
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1725221977
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
"This book makes available to the adult Christian a great deal of biblical research in a readable and popular format. It respects Jesus's Jewish heritage, locating him clearly in the complex and vibrant context of first-century Jerusalem. At the same time, it graphically presents the differing portraits of Jesus as they appear in the four Gospels, paying special attention to the accounts of his death and resurrection. Those who take up this book and read it will not only grow in their understanding of the biblical texts but will also find a rich source for spiritual reflection." --Most Rev. Anthony M. Pilla, Bishop Emeritus of Cleveland "[This book] invites the reader into the world of Jesus and the disciples, encouraging him or her to experience with them the life of first-century Palestine. The opening chapters are especially significant in their presentation of the contextual foundation of Jesus the Jew, revealing his own formation and growth as a devout Jew in a period of turmoil for the Jewish people. I would find the book especially useful as an introductory text for introductory religion and Christology courses at the college level and for adult education programs. It provides new insights into Jesus and his ministry which are especially meaningful for today." --Diana L. Hayes, Professor of Systematic Theology, Georgetown University "Finally, a book about Jesus that is both 'user friendly' and deeply insightful. This is a classy and deeply spiritual look at the Jesus of our faith, a Jesus we can approach without fear, and yet a Jesus who still awakens us and keeps us filled with awe and wonder. What Art Zannoni has done for believers is both an accomplishment and a gift for all who seek to follow the Lord more deeply. All who want to deepen their conversion journey will do themselves a favor by reading and delving into the message of these pages." --David Haas, Director of the Emmaus Center for Music, Prayer, and Ministry, St. Paul, Minnesota

How the Gospels Became History
Author: M. David Litwa
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300249489
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 311
Book Description
A compelling comparison of the gospels and Greco-Roman mythology which shows that the gospels were not perceived as myths, but as historical records Did the early Christians believe their myths? Like most ancient—and modern—people, early Christians made efforts to present their myths in the most believable ways. In this eye-opening work, M. David Litwa explores how and why what later became the four canonical gospels take on a historical cast that remains vitally important for many Christians today. Offering an in-depth comparison with other Greco-Roman stories that have been shaped to seem like history, Litwa shows how the evangelists responded to the pressures of Greco-Roman literary culture by using well-known historiographical tropes such as the mention of famous rulers and kings, geographical notices, the introduction of eyewitnesses, vivid presentation, alternative reports, and so on. In this way, the evangelists deliberately shaped myths about Jesus into historical discourse to maximize their believability for ancient audiences.
