When The Butterfly Met The Ladybug

When The Butterfly Met The Ladybug PDF Author: K. S. Collier
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781637288702
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
When the Butterfly Met the Ladybug is a short story about an unlikely friendship between a butterfly and a ladybug. As the characters in this story develop, their unique friendship is envied by the other bugs in the gardens but does not hinder the two from the instant and wonderful bond that they form. In this book, Ms. Butterfly shares stories with the little ladybug, and the ladybug learns new things. As this story unfolds, the seasons change and the time between the two characters grows shorter. The ladybug learns quickly to accept the memories with the butterfly as lessons. The colors used are symbolic of the change in the season and mood represented with playful colors for the spring and summer, shifting into calm and cooling colors for the season's end. As the author and illustrator of Manage Your Emotions Before They Manage You, I decided with this project to share a little more of myself in the tale of change, relationships, love, and loss. This concept was inspired by the relationship between two loving spirits, my daughter and my grandmother. In hopes that this piece will help families grapple with uncomfortable conversations regarding life cycles. Leaving an open ending where we as adults are able to fill in the blanks for our little ones as we see fit.

Questions of Travel

Questions of Travel PDF Author: Elizabeth Bishop
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux
ISBN: 1466889454
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 85

Book Description
The publication of this book is a literary event. It is Miss Bishop's first volume of verse since Poems, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1955. This new collection consists of two parts. Under the general heading "Brazil" are grouped eleven poems including "Manuelzinho," "The Armadillo," "Twelfth Morning, or What You Will," "The Riverman," "Brazil, January 1, 1502" and the title poem. The second section, entitled "Elsewhere," includes others "First Death in Nova Scotia," "Manners," "Sandpiper," "From Trollope's Journal," and "Visits to St. Elizabeths." In addition to the poems there is an extraordinary story of a Nova Scotia childhood, "In the Village." Robert Lowell has recently written, "I am sure no living poet is as curious and observant as Miss Bishop. What cuts so deep is that each poem is inspired by her own tone, a tone of large, grave tenderness and sorrowing amusement. She is too sure of herself for empty mastery and breezy plagiarism, too interested for confession and musical monotony, too powerful for mismanaged fire, and too civilized for idiosyncratic incoherence. She has a humorous, commanding genius for picking up the unnoticed, now making something sprightly and right, and now a great monument. Once her poems, each shining, were too few. Now they are many. When we read her, we enter the classical serenity of a new country."

Heterotopia and the City

Heterotopia and the City PDF Author: Michiel Dehaene
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134100132
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 572

Book Description
Heterotopia, literally meaning ‘other place’, is a rich concept in urban design that describes a space that is on the margins of ordered or civil society, and one that possesses multiple, fragmented or even incompatible meanings. The term has had an impact on architectural and urban theory since it was coined by Foucault in the late 1960s but it has remained a source of confusion and debate since. Heterotopia and the City seeks to clarify this concept and investigates the heterotopias which exist throughout our contemporary world: in museums, theme parks, malls, holiday resorts, gated communities, wellness hotels and festival markets. With theoretical contributions on the concept of heterotopia, including a new translation of Foucault’s influential 1967 text, Of Other Space and essays by well-known scholars, the book comprises a series of critical case studies, from Beaubourg to Bilbao, which probe a range of (post)urban transformations and which redirect the debate on the privatization of public space. Wastelands and terrains vagues are studied in detail in a section on urban activism and transgression and the reader gets a glimpse of the extremes of our dualized, postcivil condition through case studies on Jakarta, Dubai, and Kinshasa. Heterotopia and the City provides a collective effort to reposition heterotopia as a crucial concept for contemporary urban theory. The book will be of interest to all those wishing to understand the city in the emerging postcivil society and post-historical era. Planners, architects, cultural theorists, urbanists and academics will find this a valuable contribution to current critical argument.

Turtle Alveston is a survivor. At fourteen, she roams the woods along the northern California coast. The creeks, tide pools, and rocky islands are her haunts and her hiding grounds, and she is known to wander for miles. But while her physical world is expansive, her personal one is small and treacherous: Turtle has grown up isolated since the death of her mother, in the thrall of her tortured and charismatic father, Martin. Her social existence is confined to the middle school (where she fends off the interest of anyone, student or teacher, who might penetrate her shell) and to her life with her father. Then Turtle meets Jacob, a high-school boy who tells jokes, lives in a big clean house, and looks at Turtle as if she is the sunrise. And for the first time, the larger world begins to come into focus: her life with Martin is neither safe nor sustainable. Motivated by her first experience with real friendship and a teenage crush, Turtle starts to imagine escape, using the very survival skills her father devoted himself to teaching her. What follows is a harrowing story of bravery and redemption. With Turtle's escalating acts of physical and emotional courage, the reader watches, heart in throat, as this teenage girl struggles to become her own hero—and in the process, becomes ours as well. Shot through with striking language in a fierce natural setting, My Absolute Darling is an urgently told, profoundly moving read that marks the debut of an extraordinary new writer.
