The Gathering of Reason

The Gathering of Reason PDF Author: John Sallis
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 0791483274
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
This second edition of The Gathering of Reason expands on John Sallis's classic study of Kant's First Critique. This study examines the relation of imagination to reason and to human knowledge and action in general. Moving simultaneously at several different hermeneutical levels, Sallis carries out an interpretation of the Transcendental Dialectic of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Although, in contrast to the Analytic, the Dialectic seldom refers explicitly to imagination, Sallis shows that the concept of reason in the Dialectic requires the complicity of imagination. Sallis demonstrates that for Kant, reason alone does not suffice for bringing before our minds the metaphysical ideas of the soul, the world, and God; rather it is through the force of imagination that these ideas are brought forth and made effective. A new preface situates the book in relation to Sallis's later work, and an extensive afterword focuses on Kant and the Greeks.

The Art of Gathering

The Art of Gathering PDF Author: Priya Parker
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1594634939
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
"Hosts of all kinds, this is a must-read!" --Chris Anderson, owner and curator of TED From the host of the New York Times podcast Together Apart, an exciting new approach to how we gather that will transform the ways we spend our time together—at home, at work, in our communities, and beyond. In The Art of Gathering, Priya Parker argues that the gatherings in our lives are lackluster and unproductive--which they don't have to be. We rely too much on routine and the conventions of gatherings when we should focus on distinctiveness and the people involved. At a time when coming together is more important than ever, Parker sets forth a human-centered approach to gathering that will help everyone create meaningful, memorable experiences, large and small, for work and for play. Drawing on her expertise as a facilitator of high-powered gatherings around the world, Parker takes us inside events of all kinds to show what works, what doesn't, and why. She investigates a wide array of gatherings--conferences, meetings, a courtroom, a flash-mob party, an Arab-Israeli summer camp--and explains how simple, specific changes can invigorate any group experience. The result is a book that's both journey and guide, full of exciting ideas with real-world applications. The Art of Gathering will forever alter the way you look at your next meeting, industry conference, dinner party, and backyard barbecue--and how you host and attend them.

The Gathering

ISBN: 1555848079
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 214

Book Description
A crowd of siblings gathers in Dublin for the wake of their wayward brother in this “stunning” novel by the award-winning author of Actress (The Washington Post). The surviving children of the Hegarty clan are gathering for the wake of their wayward, alcoholic brother, Liam, drowned in the sea after filling his pockets with stones. He is the third of the twelve Hegarty siblings to die. His sister, Veronica, collects the body and keeps the dead man company, guarding the secret she shares with him—something that happened in their grandmother’s house in the winter of 1968. As prize-winning author Anne Enright traces the line of betrayal and redemption through three generations, her distinctive intelligence twists the world a fraction and gives it back to us in a new and unforgettable light. The Gathering is an “wonderfully elegant and unsparing” epic of an Irish family (Los Angeles Times)—a novel about love and disappointment, how memories warp and secrets fester, and how fate is written in the body, not in the stars. “Entrancing…a haunting look at a broken family stifled by generations of hurt and disappointment, struggling to make peace with the irreparable.”—Entertainment Weekly “A melancholic love and rage bubbles just beneath the surface of this Dublin clan, and Enright explores it unflinchingly.”—Publishers Weekly “Her sympathy for her characters is as tender and subtle as Alice McDermott’s; her vision of Ireland is as brave and original as Edna O’Brien’s. The Gathering is her best book.”—Colm Toibin “Hypnotic.”—Booklist (starred review)

The Gathering

The Gathering PDF Author: William Gammill
Publisher: Hampton Roads Publishing
ISBN: 1612830323
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 231

Book Description
Bill Gammill remembers what happened that quiet spring night: he remembers watching a colossal spaceship descend on a field where hundreds of people were waiting, and suddenly finding himself engaged in a baffling, exciting, otherworldly meeting, an off-world gathering of humans in "higher space." But was this just a wild dream, a hallucination, or does he remember because he truly was part of a fantastic, but very real, experience? This is what he remembers: On that wild night, that astonishing night, extraterrestrials related the fantastic but no less true history and destiny of the Earth and its inhabitants: the origins of human life on Earth, the existence of nonhuman life in the Pleiades and Sirius star systems, and the work of the legendary "Great White Brotherhood." To this day, Gammill still feels "on board" perpetually linked with this mysterious but exalted gathering of humans and aliens, a kind of galactic summit. It took him months to make some sense of his experience--the words, pictures, teachings, and the nature of the beings he encountered. The Gathering contains Gammill's original account of that experience and the revelations given to the gathering about humankind, its origins, its current possibilities and likely future--including the end times, the apocalypse, and our interaction with celestial beings. The information in this book is a wake-up call to our planet: The gathering is assembling and the future is now.

A Life Beyond Reason

A Life Beyond Reason PDF Author: Chris Gabbard
Publisher: Beacon Press
ISBN: 0807060585
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
An unflinching and luminous memoir that explores a father’s philosophical transformation when he must reconsider the questions what makes us human? and whose life is worth living? Before becoming a father, Chris Gabbard was a fast-track academic finishing his doctoral dissertation at Stanford. A disciple of Enlightenment thinkers, he was a devotee of reason, believed in the reliability of science, and lived by the dictum that an unexamined life is not worth living. That is, until his son August was born. Despite his faith that modern medicine would not fail him, August was born with a severe traumatic brain injury as a likely result of medical error and lived as a spastic quadriplegic who was cortically blind, profoundly cognitively impaired, and nonverbal. While Gabbard tried to uncover what went wrong during the birth and adjusted to his new role raising a child with multiple disabilities, he began to rethink his commitment to Enlightenment thinkers—who would have concluded that his son was doomed to a life of suffering. But August was a happy child who brought joy to just about everyone he met in his 14 years of life—and opened up Gabbard’s capacity to love. Ultimately, he comes to understand that his son is undeniably a person deserving of life. A Life Beyond Reason will challenge readers to reexamine their beliefs about who is deserving of humanity.
