Book Description
"The first in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the White House Chiefs of Staff, whose actions--and inactions--have defined the course of our country. Since George Washington, presidents have depended on the advice of key confidants. But it wasn't until the twentieth century that the White House chief of staff became the second most powerful job in government. Unelected and unconfirmed, the chief serves at the whim of the president, hired and fired by him alone. He is the president's closest adviser and the person he depends on to execute his agenda. He decides who gets to see the president, negotiates with Congress, and--most crucially--enjoys unparalleled access to the leader of the free world. When the president makes a life-and-death decision, often the chief of staff is the only other person in the room. Each chief can make or break an administration, and each president reveals himself by the chief he picks. Through extensive, intimate interviews with all seventeen living chiefs and two former presidents, award-winning journalist and producer Chris Whipple pulls back the curtain on this unique fraternity, whose members have included Rahm Emanuel, Dick Cheney, Leon Panetta, and Donald Rumsfeld. In doing so, he revises our understanding of presidential history, showing us how James Baker and Panetta skillfully managed the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, ensuring their reelections--and, conversely, how Jimmy Carter never understood the importance of a chief, crippling his ability to govern. From Watergate to Iran-Contra to the Monica Lewinsky scandal to the Iraq War, Whipple shows us how the chief of staff can make the difference between success and disaster. As an outsider president tries to govern after a bitterly divisive election, The Gatekeepers could not be more timely. Filled with shrewd analysis and never-before-reported details, it is a compelling history that changes our perspective on the presidency."--Jacket flap.

There were so many times when I would say out loud, I DID NOT see that coming! I laughed, cried, yelled, cheered, and just generally went on a crazy emotional roller coaster ride. This series was GREAT from start to end and hopefully we will hear a reunion in the making at some point (hint hint)! I recommend this book to parents and kids alike as both will enjoy A LOT!"--Jennifer Pierson ★★★★★ "LOVE THIS SERIES!!From the first page until the end, I was thinking the story would go one way and she tricked me and it was even better than I thought!"--Dowie O. ★★★★★ "I have fallen in love with Than and Therese over the series. The supporting cast of characters are phenomenal. Each book in the series has kept me up and craving more. This one is packed with far more action than the rest, with gods battling, kidnapping, deception, stolen powers, and more. With all of the plot twists, you will be on the edge of your seat the whole time! If you like a happily ever after to a series, you will be quite pleased with this one."--Stephanie S. ★★★★★ "All of the characters that I have grown to know and love in this series were back. I feel like I'm reading about close friends since I'm emotionally invested in this series. . . . The story flowed smoothly and moved quickly and there were several twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. I really loved this book, and this series, and I definitely recommend it."--Kathy E. ★★★★★ "This novel was much more action packed than its predecessors. Battles are waged, entire ways of life are defended, yet Pohler tactfully avoids the violence in this tale. I found myself caught up in the plight of the characters, trying to help them along, and keep them on the winning side, even when it seemed impossible. . . . As a whole, this story was informative, enlightening, and a pleasure to read. I laughed, I cried, I enjoyed. It's a story that parents and teens alike will love."--Jonel B. "Never a Dull Moment!!!"--Nastasia Nazar ★★★★★ "Eva certainly keeps you guessing at the outcome and I could never have predicted the ending."--Kerri Dawn Simpson ★★★★★ Grab your copy to continue the exciting adventure today! Book Description
A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program for monographs. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Precarious Claims tells the human story behind the bureaucratic process of fighting for justice in the U.S. workplace. The global economy has fueled vast concentrations of wealth that have driven a demand for cheap and flexible labor. Workplace violations such as wage theft, unsafe work environments, and discrimination are widespread in low-wage industries such as retail, restaurants, hospitality, and domestic work, where jobs are often held by immigrants and other vulnerable workers. How and why do these workers, despite enormous barriers, come forward to seek justice, and what happens once they do? Based on extensive fieldwork in Northern California, Gleeson investigates the array of gatekeepers with whom workers must negotiate in the labor standards enforcement bureaucracy and, ultimately, the limited reach of formal legal protections. The author also tracks how workplace injustices—and the arduous process of contesting them—carry long-term effects on their everyday lives. Workers sometimes win, but their chances are precarious at best.

Book Description
James Byrne's The Gatekeeper introduces Dez Limerick in the most anticipated new thriller in years. A highly trained team of mercenaries launches a well-planned, coordinated attack on a well-guarded military contractor - but they didn't count on one thing, the right man being in the wrong place at the right time. Desmond Aloysius Limerick (“Dez” to all) is a retired mercenary, and enthusiastic amateur musician, currently in Southern California, enjoying the sun and sitting in on the occasional gig, when the hotel he's at falls under attack. A skilled team attempts to kidnap the Chief legal counsel of Triton Expeditors, a major military contractor – in fact, Petra Alexandris is the daughter of the CEO – but their meticulously-planned, seamlessly executed scheme runs into the figurative 'spanner-in-the-works,' Dez himself. After foiling the attack, and with nothing better to do, Dez agrees to help Alexandris with another problem she’s having – someone has embezzled more than a billion dollars from her company and left very few tracks behind. But Dez is a gatekeeper – one who opens doors and keeps them open – and this is just a door of another kind. And the door he opens leads to a dangerous conspiracy involving media manipulation, militias, an armed coup, and an attempt to fracture the United States themselves. There’s only one obstacle between the conspirators and success – and that is Dez, The Gatekeeper.

Regulating Speech in Cyberspace

Regulating Speech in Cyberspace PDF Author: Emily B. Laidlaw
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316352056
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 355

Book Description
Private companies exert considerable control over the flow of information on the internet. Whether users are finding information with a search engine, communicating on a social networking site or accessing the internet through an ISP, access to participation can be blocked, channelled, edited or personalised. Such gatekeepers are powerful forces in facilitating or hindering freedom of expression online. This is problematic for a human rights system which has historically treated human rights as a government responsibility, and this is compounded by the largely light-touch regulatory approach to the internet in the West. Regulating Speech in Cyberspace explores how these gatekeepers operate at the intersection of three fields of study: regulation (more broadly, law), corporate social responsibility and human rights. It proposes an alternative corporate governance model for speech regulation, one that acts as a template for the increasingly common use of non-state-based models of governance for human rights.
