Pages : 168
Book Description
The theatre of the French Renaissance has been little studied, and the character types appearing in it are even less explored. While the bibliography of other type characters such as the soubrette, the confidente, and the valet is rich, the procuress has not been studied. This book consists of six chapters. Chapter I studies the sources for this character as found in Classical works as well as contemporary Spanish and Italian ones. Chapters II, III, and IV study the three major incarnations of this character type: Marion in Les Esbahis by Jacques Grévin, Guillemette in Pierre de Larivey's La Veuve, and Odet de Turnèbe's Françoise in Les Contens. Chapter V looks at procuresses of lesser importance. Nine such characters appear in these plays. This chapter also presents some general remarks on the character and the evolution, or lack thereof, of the type. The concluding chapter (VI) explores the future of this character and her disappearance as a stock type for comedies.

Authority and Sexuality in Early Modern Burgundy (1550-1730)
Author: James R. Farr
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195358384
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 263
Book Description
A sociocultural analysis of the relationships among law, religion, and sexual morality in Burgundy during the Catholic Reformation, this book is divided into two, interrelated parts: the world of prescription and the world of practice. The first part examines the construction of authority, focusing primarily upon Burgundy's dominant elite legal community. The second part of the book examines the deployment of authority, and its appropriation by French men and women. The new moral order focused on sexuality and the imposition of this order involved a legal contest over the disposition of bodies, both male and female, be they priests, courting couples, victims of seduction or rape, or prostitutes. James Farr's book offers an unusually fertile approach to study the link between sexuality and criminality.

Romantic Drama
Author: Frederick Burwick
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139476998
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 355
Book Description
Drama in the Romantic period underwent radical changes affecting theatre performance, acting, and audience. Theatres were rebuilt and expanded to accommodate larger audiences, and consequently acting styles and the plays themselves evolved to meet the expectations of the new audiences. This book examines manifestations of change in acting, stage design, setting, and the new forms of drama. Actors exercised a persistent habit of stepping out of their roles, whether scripted or not. Burwick traces the radical shifts in acting style from Garrick to Kemble and Siddons, and to Kean and Macready, adding a new dimension to understanding the shift in cultural sensibility from early to later Romantic literature. Eye-witness accounts by theatre-goers and critics attending plays at the major playhouses of London, the provinces, and on the Continent are provided, allowing readers to identify with the experience of being in the theatre during this tumultuous period.
