Excerpt from The Forester, Vol. 9 Richard Davenport Harlan was born November 14, 1859, at Evans ville, Indiana. He was prepared for college at the Boys' High School of Louisville, Kentucky, and in 1881 was graduated from Princeton Uni versity, as valedictorian of his class. In 1884 he received the degree of M. A. From the same institution. Hé was a member of the Princeton chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. After taking the full course at the Prince ton Theological Seminary, which course he completed in 1885, he remained there a year, studying and teaching. He was ordained by the Presbytery of New York in 1886 and in the same year became pastor of the Old First Presbyterian church of New York City, where he remained until 1890. The two years following were spent in theological study at the University of Berlin and in travel. In 1894, having returned to America, Mr. Harlan was called to the Third Presbyterian church of Rochester, New York, in which pastorate he rem'ained for seven years. He received from his Alma Mater the degree of D. D. In June, 1902, and in 1901 had been unanimously chosen by the Board of Trustees to. Excerpt from Forest Worker, Vol. 9: January, 1933 Helen E. Stockbridge, librarian of the United States Forest Service, died December 20 following an operation. Miss Stockbridge entered the Forest Service in 1901. Since 1904 she had been in charge of the library, which has increased from a very small nucleus to a complete collection of more than books and pamphlets on forestry to which current publications are constantly being added. Miss Stockbridge was an authority on forestry literature, and prepared bibliographies on many different phases of the subject. Officers elected at the recent annual meeting of the Ohio Valley Section of the Society of American Forest ers are Shirley W. Allen, professor of forestry at the School of Forestry and Conservation of the University of Michigan, chairman; T. E. Shaw, extension forester of Indiana, secretary-treasurer; and R. B. Miller, chief forester of Illinois, in charge of new memberships. George W. Peavy, dean of the school of forestry of Oregon State College, as ranking dean of the college has been made permanent chairman of its administra tive council. E. G. Mason, assistant professor of forestry of the Oregon State College, is at Yale University this year working for the doctor's degree. Richard Kearns is substituting for him at Corvallis. Harry Smith, a graduate of the Pennsylvania State Forest School, 1925, who has been with the Alabama Department of Forestry for the past six years, is doing graduate work at Yale University. Chapin Jones, State forester of Virginia for 18 years, has been appointed director of education and research of the Virginia division of forestry. F. C.
