Handbook of Experimental Catalysis

Handbook of Experimental Catalysis PDF Author: Thomas F. Degnan, Jr.
Publisher: Wiley-Interscience
ISBN: 9780471384168
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 880

Book Description
Broad in scope, the Handbook of Experimental Catalysis describes the general theory and practice of using the Electron Capture Detector (ECD) to study reactions of thermal electrons with molecules. It reviews the electron affinities and thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of atoms, small molecules, and large organic molecules obtained by using various methods. Clearly written and organized, this book is a useful guide to both the theory and practice of experimental catalysis. In addition to information on the ECD, the book summarizes other methods for studying reactions of thermal electrons with molecules. It also discusses applications in analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and biochemistry, and provides a data table of electron affinities. Analytical, physical, and environmental chemists, biochemists and biophysicists, and students in these disciplines will make good use of the Handbook of Experimental Catalysis in the study of these reactions.

Modern Methods of Steroid Analysis

Modern Methods of Steroid Analysis PDF Author: Erich Heftmann
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323146449
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 558

Book Description
Modern Methods of Steroid Analysis reviews modern methods of steroid analysis such as liquid column chromatography, mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography. Topics covered include qualitative and quantitative analysis of plant sterols by gas-liquid chromatography; Raman spectroscopy of steroids; nuclear magnetic resonance; and applications of lanthanide shift reagents. A computerized method for rapid comparison and retrieval of infrared spectral data is also described. This volume is comprised of 22 chapters and begins with an analysis of hormonal steroids using liquid column chromatography, followed by a discussion on the separation of insect molting hormones using high-pressure liquid chromatography. The reader is methodically introduced to the application of gradient elution and thin-layer chromatography to the analysis of corticosteroids and 17-ketosteroids, as well as some aspects of mass spectrometry in steroid analysis. Subsequent chapters explore other methods such as optical rotatory dispersion and circular dichroism, along with radioisotope techniques. In particular, the radioimmunoassay of plasma steroid hormones and plasma aldosterone is considered. This book should be of interest to biochemists.

Applications of Supercritical Fluids in Industrial Analysis

Applications of Supercritical Fluids in Industrial Analysis PDF Author: J.R. Dean
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940112146X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 238

Book Description
The continued search for rapid, efficient and cost-effective means of analytical measurement has introduced supercritical fluids into the field of analytical chemistry. Two areas are common: supercritical fluid chroma tography and supercritical fluid extraction. Both seek to exploit the unique properties of a gas at temperatures and pressures above the critical point. The most common supercritical fluid is carbon dioxide, employed because of its low critical temperature (31 °C), inertness, purity, non-toxicity and cheapness. Alternative supercritical fluids are also used and often in conjunction with modifiers. The combined gas-like mass transfer and liquid-like solvating characteristics have been used for improved chroma tographic separation and faster sample preparation. Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is complementary to gas chro matography ( GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), providing higher efficiency than HPLC, together with the ability to analyse thermally labile and high molecular weight analytes. Both packed and open tubular columns can be employed, providing the capability to analyse a wide range of sample types. In addition, flame ionization detection can be used, thus providing 'universal' detection.

Instruments of Science PDF Author: Robert Bud
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 9780815315612
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 740

Book Description
With over 300 entries from the ancient abacus to X-ray diffraction, as represented by a ca. 1900 photo of an X- ray machine as well as the latest research into filmless x- ray systems, this tour of the history of scientific instruments in multiple disciplines provides context and a bibliography for each entry. Newer conceptions of "instrument" include organisms widely used in research: e.g. the mouse, drosophila, and E. coli. Bandw photographs and diagrams showcase more traditional instruments from The Science Museum, London, and the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
