Book Description
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common environmental contaminants which pose a potential threat to human health and environmental quality. An investigation to determine the ability of ultrasonic radiation to desorb PAHs adsorbed on solid substrates and to chemically alter these chemicals in aqueous solutions and suspensions has been conducted. The data indicate that enhanced transport of adsorbed PAH from a glass surface can be induced by treatment with ultrasonic radiation of varying intensities. Furthermore, chemical alteration can be induced under intense (147 watts/cm2) ultrasonic treatment. The extent of reaction is a function of irradation time at this ultrasonic intensity. Reaction products from ultrasonic treatment of aqueous solutions of biphenyl, analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS), include ortho-, meta-, and para-(1,1 biphenyl)-o1. The principal product from ultra-sonic treatment of aqueous phenanthrene appears to be a phenanthrenediol. The use of ultrasound to treat PAH contaminated aqueous solutions in tandem with other methodologies appears promising. However, the toxicity of reaction product mixtures produced by ultrasonic treatment remains to be determined.

Sonochemical Water and Wastewater Decontamination
Author: Slimane Merouani
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3111137945
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 508
Book Description
The sonochemical process is newly advanced oxidation process (AOP) developed for hazardous pollutants destruction in aqueous effluents. This technique produces, in situ, a highly oxidative environment via the irradiation of aqueous solution using high frequency ultrasound to degrade potential contaminants. This book covers sonochemical pollutant degradation from fundamental principles, recent application, to challenges and future trends.

Analytical Applications of Ultrasound
Author: F. Priego Capote
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 008046937X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 413
Book Description
Ultrasound is an energy source that has the potential for enhancing many stages of experimental analysis, but analytical chemists generally have limited knowledge of this technique. Analytical Applications of Ultrasound lays the foundations for practicing analytical chemists to consider ways of exploiting ultrasound energy in their research. This timely and unique book covers a broad range of information about ultrasound, providing advances in ultrasound equipment and demonstrations of how this energy has been used to enhance various steps of analysis. Given the limited literature on analytical applications of ultrasound, the authors provide information from other sources that suggest ways in which we can use it in the analytical laboratory. The authors discuss the principles of ultrasound and the variables we must consider in adapting ultrasound to different problems.* Presents an up-to-date, balanced description of the potential of Ultrasound within Analytical Chemistry* Discusses ultrasound-based detection techniques in a systematic manner* Provides an overview of potential applications of ultrasound in a variety of different fields
