Acute Effects of Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (SASTM) on Lower Extremity Flexibility, Isokinetic and Isometric Strength

Acute Effects of Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (SASTM) on Lower Extremity Flexibility, Isokinetic and Isometric Strength PDF Author: Jeffrey Allen Beer

Pages : 110

Book Description
SASTMTM is a myofascial technique used to mobilize soft tissue and aid in the elongation of soft tissue and create physiological change. The purpose of the study was to determine the acute effects of Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (SASTMTM) on lower extremity hamstring strength (isokinetic & isometric) and flexibility. Thirty division III male athletes with limited ROM of d"90o of knee extension with 90o of hip flexion while lying supine consented to volunteer. Each subject was treated and measured through a double-blinded experimental design where the subjects and tester were unaware of the real treatment being administered and measured. The research consisted of 4 visits (familiarization/baseline, and 3 data collection session). Testing sessions were conducted a week after the baseline session, followed by two sessions, 2 days and a week after the 1st session. Three different modalities (SASTMTM, Therapeutic Ultrasound and "The Stick") were performed on a treatment leg, and the opposite leg served as a control. Data collection consisted of a warm-up on a cycle ergometer followed by one randomly chosen modality on the treatment leg. Data collection was conducted using a Cybex 300-isokinetic device and a digital goniometer. Isokinetic strength testing was performed at 60, 180 and 240o/s. Isometric testing was collected at 45o of knee flexion. Repeated two-way ANOVA's (3-Treatment x 3-Time) were used for statistical analyses to determine the effects of interventions and the time on strength and flexibility. The statistical analyses resulted in no significant results (pd"05) for acute effects for either strength or flexibility with respect to time, treatment or treatment and time interactions

The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching

The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching PDF Author: David Behm
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040149227
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book to cover the underlying physiology and psychology of flexibility enhancing techniques, critically assessing why, when, and how we should stretch, as well as offering a highly illustrated, practical guide to stretching exercises. This fully revised new edition not only updates the present information but adds new chapters on areas that have attracted substantial interest in the last 5 years such as foam rolling, vibration, global effects of stretching, alternative methods to increase flexibility (e.g., resistance training) and others. Richly illustrated, and including an online resource, The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching provides an important scientific inquiry into stretching as well as other flexibility enhancing techniques (e.g., foam rolling, vibration, resistance training, and others) and an invaluable reference for any strength and conditioning coach or student, personal trainer, sports coach, or exercise scientist.

The Effect of Stretching and Tool-assisted Friction Massage on Hamstring Flexibility

The Effect of Stretching and Tool-assisted Friction Massage on Hamstring Flexibility PDF Author: Sarah E. Merkel

Category : Hamstring muscle
Languages : en
Pages : 83

Book Description
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of tool-assisted massage and passive stretching on hamstring flexibility. The hamstring is the most commonly injured multijoint muscle group in the body. To decrease the incidence of hamstring injury, clinicians employ the use of passive stretching to treat muscle shortening. Participants included male college baseball players between the ages of 18 and 24 years (n = 21). Utilizing three study groups, the participants' hamstring flexibility was measured by employing the passive knee extension test. Measurements of hamstring flexibility were taken prior to the study intervention and after the study intervention. The results indicated a significant increase in hamstring flexibility for the passive stretching and Fuzion groups, alpha = .05, p

Effect of Dynamic Stretching, Hot Pack, and Massage Application on Hamstring Flexibility

Effect of Dynamic Stretching, Hot Pack, and Massage Application on Hamstring Flexibility PDF Author: Jill C. Cavalieri
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Muscle rigidity
Languages : en
Pages : 160

Book Description
Abstract: The investigation was designed to determine the whether therapeutic techniques when coupled with dynamic stretching had an impact on hamstring flexibility. Participants (N = 18) were male student volunteers assigned to participate in all three of the treatment conditions. The treatment conditions included: (a) 20-min hot pack application followed by a dynamic exercise, (b) 20-min of no treatment, lying on a table followed by a dynamic exercise, and (c) 9- to 12-min massage application followed by a dynamic exercise. The dynamic exercise consisted of 15 leg swings through full hip flexion and extension. All measurements were taken in degrees by a goniometer using the participants' nondominant kicking leg. A 3 x 2 repeated measures ANOVA with two repeated measures revealed significant (p = .00) gains from pretest to posttest. No significant (p = .79) differences were found among the treatment conditions, and the interaction between treatment conditions and testing times was also non-significant (p = .53).
