Next Generation Sequencing and Whole Genome Selection in Aquaculture
Author: Zhanjiang (John) Liu
Publisher: John Wiley and Sons
ISBN: 0470958928
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 248
Book Description
Recent developments in DNA marker technologies, in particular the emergence of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) discovery, have rendered some of the traditional methods of genetic research outdated. Next Generation Sequencing and Whole Genome Selection in Aquaculture comprehensively covers the current state of research in whole genome selection and applies these discoveries to the aquaculture industry specifically. The text begins with a thorough review of SNP and transitions into topics such as next generation sequencing, EST data mining, SNP quality assessment, and whole genome selection principles. Ending with a discussion of the technology's specific applications to the industry, this text will be a valuable reference for those involved in all aspects of aquaculture research. Special Features: Unique linking of SNP technologies, next generation sequencing technologies, and whole genome selection in the context of aquaculture research Thorough review of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism and existing research 8-page color plate section featuring detailed illustrations

Fat Deposition in a Broiler Sire Strain
Author: F. R. Leenstra
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Animal genetics
Languages : en
Pages : 160
Book Description
Against this background, in 1980 a research program was started at the Spelderholt Centre aimed at reducing fatness in broilers. The purpose of the program was to examine the possibilities and the consequences of selection against fatness. The results of the research program are set forth in this thesis.

Models and Estimation of Genetic Effects
Author: José M Álvarez-Castro
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2889194442
Category : Ecology
Languages : en
Pages : 100
Book Description
Ronald Fisher needed to develop elaborate models of genetic effects in order to set the foundations of Quantitative Genetics in his 1918 paper “The correlation between relatives on the supposition of Mendelian inheritance”. Since then, many significant implementations have been made to model genetic effects. However, at the verge of one century after Fisher’s kick-off, models of genetic effects keep on being discussed and implemented. Indeed, the relatively recent advent of QTL analyses challenged the state of the art of this field by providing researchers the opportunity to obtain and analyze estimates of genetic effects from real data. In this context, the development of this field was not exempt of some polemics, like the debate about the convenience of the functional and the statistical epistasis approaches. This research topic is meant to provide recent developments in models and estimation of genetic effects and to enrich the discussion about how and why models of genetic effects must be further developed and applied. The articles in this Research Topic shall thus extend, refine and/or provide a refresh look at Fisher’s original models of genetic effects and their application to genetic effects estimation and to improve our understanding of evolutionary processes and breeding programs.

The Behavioural Biology of Chickens
Author: Christine J Nicol
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 1780642490
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 202
Book Description
Chickens are by far the world’s most widely farmed animal, kept for both meat and egg production. They are at the centre of many debates regarding housing and production systems, causing significant interest in what lies behind chicken behaviour. This accessible book covers sensory biology, behavioural development, preferences and aversions, social behaviour, learning and cognition, behavioural issues in different systems and solutions for behavioural problems. Authored by an authority on chicken ethology, it brings together the fields of animal behaviour, neuroscience, psychology and epidemiology to provide a comprehensive understanding of chicken behaviour and help improve the lives of farmed chickens around the world.
