Book Description
Speech and language impairments are one of the most challenging features of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Children with ASD are also known to be particularly responsive to music. This book makes a valuable connection between the two traits to showcase music as an effective way of enhancing the speech and language skills of children with ASD. This is a comprehensive guide to Dr. Hayoung Lim's highly effective approach of using music in speech-language training for children ASD. Part I provides a sound theoretical foundation and employs the most up-to-date research, including the author's own extensive study, to validate the use of music in speech and language training for children with ASD. Part II analyzes the clinical implications of “Developmental Speech- Language Training through Music” (DSLM) protocols and explains in detail specific interventions that can be used with the approach. The practical application of DSLM to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Verbal Behavior (VB) approaches is also explored. This is essential reading for music therapists, speech and language pathologists and other professionals working with children with autism, as well as researchers and academics in the field.

Abstract: ABSTRACT Children with hearing impairments experience particular difficulties in the acquisition of early communication skills and music therapy has been used to help them with language and communication. A 4-year-old hearing-impaired girl, who was integrated in a mainstream preschool and her normally developing classmates, participated in a music intervention program over a period of 26 weeks. This program included the normal elements of music teaching such as singing, playing instruments, moving to music, listening to music, and creating music as well as auditory training and speech and language training. Another hearing impaired child in a comparable preschool served as a control and participated in normal preschool music activities during the intervention period. Both children were assessed on their speech and language skills at prior to the intervention (Time 1) and after it (Time 2). Results indicated that the language scores of both children with hearing impairments were higher at Time 2 than at Time 1. However, the hearing-impaired child who received the music intervention program showed better progress than the other hearing-impaired child. Her teachers demonstrated creativity and showed greater flexibility and adaptability in curriculum planning. Furthermore, the positive outcome helped her parents rebuild their confidence. They were more motivated to share information with teachers and got themselves involved in her learning. The implications of the findings for preschool children with hearing impairments are discussed. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3554039 Subjects: Preschool music - Instruction and study - China - Hong Kong Hearing impaired children - China - Hong Kong - Education Preschool children - China - Hong Kong - Education
