Alma W. Thomas

Alma W. Thomas PDF Author: Jonathan Frederick Walz

Pages : 336

Book Description
"In a collaboration between curators at The Columbus Museum and the Chrysler Museum of Art, Alma W. Thomas: Everything is Beautiful, works toward a primary objective: to introduce the Thomas-related materials housed at The Columbus Museum to a broader public, and to demonstrate how those materials reshape the narratives surrounding the artist. The wealth of material in The Columbus Museum's collection-from student work of the 1920s and marionettes from the 1930s, to home furnishings, ephemera, and little-known works on paper-offers a robust, but until now untold, account of Thomas's artistic journey. Taking cues from Thomas's wide-ranging interests and her broad network of collaborators and supporters, our museums also sought a scholarly approach that resonated with the artist's own disregard for silos, borders, and other arbitrary limitations. Assembling an interdisciplinary advisory committee of more than twenty scholars of diverse backgrounds and experiences, the curators convened a two-day gathering at the University of Maryland Center for Art and Knowledge at The Phillips Collection in January 2020 to illuminate varied aspects of Thomas's creativity and amplify the show's interdisciplinary approach. By applying interdisciplinary approaches to a range of artistic objects, the overall project presents new insights into Thomas's diverse forms of creativity while offering an inspiring look at how to lead a rich and beautiful life"--

Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 166

Book Description
Norfolk's churches are home to some of the highest-quality and best-preserved medieval stained glass in Britain. Panels produced in the county's extensive and long-lasting workshops, centred in the historically important city of Norwich, can be found in some 270 buildings, including churches, museums and country houses. Moreover, recent research has revealed for the first time the original location of many of the panels now dispersed around the county. In Stories in Glass, Paul Harley and David King reveal these treasures to a new audience. Harley's exquisite photographs are set alongside historical and artistic explanations that illuminate the social, economic and religious background to the windows we see today. With 200 colour images, and maps showing the locations of the windows discussed, this beautifully illustrated guide will appeal to the explorer and collector alike.

English Panel Paintings, 1400-1558

English Panel Paintings, 1400-1558 PDF Author: Audrey Baker
Publisher: Archetype Publications
ISBN: 9781904982692
Category : Arte cristiano
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The art of East Anglia was pre-eminent during the late thirteenth and the first half of the fourteenth century. Wooden screens with painted panels were one of the most essential fittings of late pre-Reformation churches, serving both to protect the high altar and to define the division between the chancel and the nave and aisles. Whereas very few screens dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries survive, the extant fifteenth-century rood-screen paintings in East Anglia form the largest body of late mediaeval painting to be found in England. Details of more than a thousand panels from over one hundred screens are listed, described and in many cases illustrated in this volume, accompanied by commentaries on their design, techniques and materials used in their making and who paid for them.
