This is the twelfth book in the series International Straits of the World which describes the geography of a narrow waterway linking two seas and its relevance to shipping, economic development, and social welfare in the region, especially examining the legal status of the strait and its international relations. As a central focus, this study addresses the legal status of the Strait in the light of the 1982 U.N. Law of the Sea Convention. The Convention not only prescribes limits to the territorial sea, an exclusive economic zone and a continental shelf for coastal states, but also addresses rules for the transit of straits for international navigation. The book details the unusual demarcation of Australian territorial seas in certain islands and the unique fisheries - deep seabed lines of jurisdiction. Finally, this study turns sympathetically to the welfare of the Islanders, a small distinct ethnic group which has suffered losses in land, culture, and independence through the rush of western civilization. One of the first American colonies was New Netherland, established by the Dutch government of the Netherlands more than 160 years before the American Revolution. New Netherland encompassed all of New York, and parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, and Delaware. Early explorers charted land and waterways and claimed them for the Netherlands. They also discovered a profitable trade in furs with Native American tribes. Already successful in trade with Asia, the Dutch established the West India Company to invest in the trade opportunities in America. One of the first things they did was to encourage settlement in New Netherland. People from throughout Europe took advantage of settling in the new colony. According to one governor, Peter Stuyvesant, eighteen different languages were spoken in New Netherland. The Dutch and British had long disagreed about boundaries. These disagreements led to three Anglo-Dutch Wars. In the end, the British took control of New Netherland and renamed it New York. But the Dutch influence on the colony and its people continued.

This volume is an attempt to give the American reader an idea of the extent of the Dutch network of trade in the seventeenth century. Although some effort is made to sketch out, however briefly, the activities of the Dutch in various regions throughout the century, emphas1s has been placed on their first entrance into these areas in that period. In each area the goods which the Netherlanders received have been indicated as well as the products they traded for them. The arrangement of the chapters calls for an explanation. Students of Dutch history will think of Surat and Persia as a natural unit, and of Malabar and Ceylon, Japan and China, West Africa and Brazil as being other entities which one would naturally discuss together. I have adopted the more obvious national divisions, Persia, India, Japan, Brazil, etc., as being more easily com prehensible for the casual reader. Within the chapters I have then explained the trade connections between West Africa and Brazil, Surat and Persia, and so forth.
