This longitudinal qualitative study explores the motivation and identity development of students in a comprehensive university who are learning English as a second language (L2). It is set in the contemporary People's Republic of China, where dramatic sociocultural, political and economical changes are taking place. Multiple research methods, including interviews, diary studies and recorded interactions, are employed. The author considers in her study both the impact of broader issues such as globalization and more local social development on language learners at tertiary-level in China, and the effects of discourse and community in constructing motivation. This study combines detailed linguistic analysis with sociocultural theory, together with the concept of communities of practice. In so doing, the author investigates the social, historical, linguistic and individualistic factors that combine dynamically over time to co-construct learners' motivation. A critical discourse analysis approach to exploring language learner motivation presents an enhanced understanding of the relationship between motivation and interaction, providing a line of enquiry and manifold new insights.

This book examines Chinese tertiary students' experiences of learning English in Sino-Australian programs in China. Using an institutional ethnography, the book examines one well-established Sino-Australian program based at a Chinese university. The book explores the ways that participant students used the Chinese words, tropes and their meanings to describe their English learning experiences with both local Chinese and foreign English teachers. This book introduces an innovative theoretical framework, “representation theory with a multilingual perspective”, to analyse how Chinese students' everyday experiences are constructed and mediated through language, discourse and identity. This framework also highlights graphic examples of how concepts are created in both Chinese and English, and thus serves as a powerful tool for deconstructing dichotomies between China and the West. Study abroad (SA) as a domain of inquiry in the field of Applied Linguistics has been approached from a variety of different perspectives. Although originally focused on measuring the impact of residence abroad on students’ language development, in the last decade the so-called ‘social’ turn in Second Language Acquisition has brought to the fore the importance of socio-cultural aspects of the students’ experiences (such as the amount of contact they have with the local community, their social networks, etc.). This monograph investigates 15 L2 creative writers’ social constructive power in identity constructions. Through interviews and think-aloud story writing sessions, the central study considers how L2 writer voices are mediated by the writers’ autobiographical identities, namely, their sense of selves formulated by their previous language learning and literacy experiences.
