Dialect Identification

Dialect Identification PDF Author:

Book Description
The objective of this work was to develop and evaluate a capability to automatically determine the dialect spoken in samples of recorded speech. Language identification (LID) software automatically determines the language spoken in samples of recorded speech. ITTI had developed several LID programs when the testing phase of this effort began, the two most important being a "speaker dependent" and a "speaker independent" version. Both of these programs served as baseline systems. In broad terms, this effort had as one objective the testing of pre-existing LID algorithms on a dialect identification (DID) task, and subsequent development of a baseline system to improve its DID performance as another objective. The testing was specifically required to assess the effect on DID performance as another objective. The testing was specifically required to assess the effect on DID performance (i.e., accuracy) of operating parameters known to be important in tactical applications of speech-related automatic recognition algorithms, including speech segment duration, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), bandwidth, amount of available dialect sample data, and spectral tilt variations such as those which are introduced by various communications channels. At the outset of the effort, ITTI was directed to consider wholly new approaches to DID, apart from the techniques previously found useful for automatic LID and incorporated in the pre-existing LID programs. Priority was to be given to consideration of the findings of academic dialectologists, by examining the technical dialectology literature in hopes of finding additional, new approaches to automatic DID. A literature survey and analysis of the potential of what was found there for automatic DID was therefore also a high priority objective of this effort

Unsupervised Dialect Classification for Real Time Data Fusing of Acoustic and Language Information

Unsupervised Dialect Classification for Real Time Data Fusing of Acoustic and Language Information PDF Author: Rahul Chitturi

Category : Automatic speech recognition

Pages : 98

Book Description
Automatic Dialect Classification has recently gained substantial interest in the speech processing community. Studies have shown that the variation in speech due to dialect is a factor which significantly impacts speech system performance. Dialects differ in various ways such as acoustic traits (phonetic realization of vowels and consonants, rhythmical characteristics, prosody) and content based word selection (grammar, vocabulary, phonetic distribution, lexical distribution, semantics). In this study, we investigate various methods of improving the acoustic and language based dialect classification and finally combines them in an effective ways to improve overall dialect classification (DC).

Computational Paralinguistics

Computational Paralinguistics PDF Author: Björn Schuller
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118706625
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 330

Book Description
This book presents the methods, tools and techniques that are currently being used to recognise (automatically) the affect, emotion, personality and everything else beyond linguistics (‘paralinguistics’) expressed by or embedded in human speech and language. It is the first book to provide such a systematic survey of paralinguistics in speech and language processing. The technology described has evolved mainly from automatic speech and speaker recognition and processing, but also takes into account recent developments within speech signal processing, machine intelligence and data mining. Moreover, the book offers a hands-on approach by integrating actual data sets, software, and open-source utilities which will make the book invaluable as a teaching tool and similarly useful for those professionals already in the field. Key features: Provides an integrated presentation of basic research (in phonetics/linguistics and humanities) with state-of-the-art engineering approaches for speech signal processing and machine intelligence. Explains the history and state of the art of all of the sub-fields which contribute to the topic of computational paralinguistics. C overs the signal processing and machine learning aspects of the actual computational modelling of emotion and personality and explains the detection process from corpus collection to feature extraction and from model testing to system integration. Details aspects of real-world system integration including distribution, weakly supervised learning and confidence measures. Outlines machine learning approaches including static, dynamic and context‐sensitive algorithms for classification and regression. Includes a tutorial on freely available toolkits, such as the open-source ‘openEAR’ toolkit for emotion and affect recognition co-developed by one of the authors, and a listing of standard databases and feature sets used in the field to allow for immediate experimentation enabling the reader to build an emotion detection model on an existing corpus.

Empirical Methods in Natural Language Generation

Empirical Methods in Natural Language Generation PDF Author: Emiel Krahmer
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3642155731
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 363

Book Description
Natural language generation (NLG) is a subfield of natural language processing (NLP) that is often characterized as the study of automatically converting non-linguistic representations (e.g., from databases or other knowledge sources) into coherent natural language text. In recent years the field has evolved substantially. Perhaps the most important new development is the current emphasis on data-oriented methods and empirical evaluation. Progress in related areas such as machine translation, dialogue system design and automatic text summarization and the resulting awareness of the importance of language generation, the increasing availability of suitable corpora in recent years, and the organization of shared tasks for NLG, where different teams of researchers develop and evaluate their algorithms on a shared, held out data set have had a considerable impact on the field, and this book offers the first comprehensive overview of recent empirically oriented NLG research.
