Book Description
The development of a fatigue crack-growth predictive technique for variable amplitude loading, initiated under previous NADC support, was continued. Attention was focused on a simple version of the general model. This provided a crack growth predictive formula for constant amplitude loading. Comparisons with experimental results and a semiempirical crack-growth law ahow that the prediction is quite realistic. The work has also indicated how improvements in the general model can be made to cope with more realistic service conditions. The further steps required to develop an efficient model that can cope with both variable amplitude loading and environmental effects are outlined. (Author).

Fatigue of Structures and Materials

Fatigue of Structures and Materials PDF Author: J. Schijve
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402068085
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 627

Book Description
Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

Fatigue Crack Growth Prediction Methods for Variable Amplitude Loading

Fatigue Crack Growth Prediction Methods for Variable Amplitude Loading PDF Author:

Pages : 32

Book Description
Considerable data on fatigue properties of materials under constant amplitude loading is available in the literature under the forms representative of the different aspects of the fatigue phenomenon. To employ these data, the design engineer must adapt it to the particular service conditions that he is concerned with. The stress vs. life or S-N curve is largely related to the fatigue initiation behaviour of materials and defines the endurance limit which is used for design. The strain-life curve is of more recent origin and relates the elastic and plastic strain amplitudes to the initiation life. Fatigue propagation data are presented on a crack growth rate vs. stress intensity factor range diagram.

Towards a Unified Fatigue Life Prediction Method for Marine Structures

Towards a Unified Fatigue Life Prediction Method for Marine Structures PDF Author: Weicheng Cui
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3642418317
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
In order to apply the damage tolerance design philosophy to design marine structures, accurate prediction of fatigue crack growth under service conditions is required. Now, more and more people have realized that only a fatigue life prediction method based on fatigue crack propagation (FCP) theory has the potential to explain various fatigue phenomena observed. In this book, the issues leading towards the development of a unified fatigue life prediction (UFLP) method based on FCP theory are addressed. Based on the philosophy of the UFLP method, the current inconsistency between fatigue design and inspection of marine structures could be resolved. This book presents the state-of-the-art and recent advances, including those by the authors, in fatigue studies. It is designed to lead the future directions and to provide a useful tool in many practical applications. It is intended to address to engineers, naval architects, research staff, professionals and graduates engaged in fatigue prevention design and survey of marine structures, in fatigue studies of materials and structures, in experimental laboratory research, in planning the repair and maintenance of existing structures, and in rule development. The book is also an effective educational aid in naval architecture, marine, civil and mechanical engineering. Prof. Weicheng Cui is the Dean of Hadal Science and Technology Research Center of Shanghai Ocean University, China. Dr. Xiaoping Huang is an associate professor of School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Dr. Fang Wang is an associate professor of Hadal Science and Technology Research Center of Shanghai Ocean University, China.
