'The Spirit of the Lord Came Upon Me'

'The Spirit of the Lord Came Upon Me' PDF Author: Lester L. Grabbe
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0567710718
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 441

Book Description
Lester Grabbe here distills his wide body of work on the subject of prophecy. The volume considers prophecy in different cultural contexts across ancient Israel and surrounding areas. Beginning with a consideration of prophecy in the Hebrew Bible, Grabbe then looks at it as phenomenon in the ancient near east, including Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Levant. From this background in the immediate context of ancient Israel, Grabbe then widens the cultural lens to consider prophecy in more global environments, including Africa and the Americas, and recent examples of pseudo-biblical prophets such as Joseph Smith. In the final part of the book Grabbe then analyses these different prophetic types and forms, looking at the continuing traditions of prophecy alongside their ancient roots.

Justin: Epitome of the Philippic History of Pompeius Trogus: Volume II: Books 13-15

Justin: Epitome of the Philippic History of Pompeius Trogus: Volume II: Books 13-15 PDF Author: Marcus Junianus Justinus
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0199277591
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 375

Book Description
Pompeius Trogus, a Romanized Gaul living in the age of Augustus, wrote a forty-four book universal history (The Philippic History) of the non-Roman Mediterranean world. This work was later abbreviated by M. Junianus Justinus. Alexander the Great's life has been examined in minute detail by scholars for many decades, but the period of chaos that ensued after his death in 323 BC has received much less attention. Few historical sources recount the history of this period consecutively. Justin's abbreviated epitome of the lost Philippic history of Pompeius Trogus is the only relatively continuous account we have left of the events that transpired in the 40 years from 323 BC. This volume supplies a historical analysis of this unique source for the difficult period of Alexander's Successors up to 297 BC, a full translation, and running commentary on Books 13-15.

The Historian's Craft in the Age of Herodotus

The Historian's Craft in the Age of Herodotus PDF Author: Nino Luraghi
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780199215119
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
The origins and development of Greek historiography cannot be properly understood unless early historical writings are situated in the framework of late archaic and early classical Greek culture and society. Contextualization opens up new perspectives on the subject in The Historian's Craft inthe Age of Herodotus. At the same time, such writings offer significant insights into how works of Herodotus reflect the attitude of fifth-century Greeks towards the transmission and manipulation of knowledge about the past. Essays by an international range of experts explore all aspects of thetopic and, at the same time, make a thought-provoking contribution to the ongoing debates concerning literacy and oral culture.
