Book Description
Excerpt from The Dakota Language Accent in Dakota is quite important. The meaning of many words depends upon it as, for instance, ma-ga, a field, and ma-ga, a goose. The principle of accenting seems to be determined from the beginning of the word, not from the' end. In the case of two thirds, or perhaps three fourths, of all the words in the language, the accent is on the second syllable from the beginning. The greater part of the remainder are accented on the first syllable there are a few cases of polysyllables accented on the penultimate. In words of four or more syllables, a secondary accent follows on the second syllable after the primary. Hence it is not unfavorable to the composition of poetry; but, as almost all words end in a vowel or nasal n. Rhyme can have very little variety. The language is sometimes figurative from necessity and sometimes from choice. In the latter case, their figures are often far fetched. When they ask for an ox in soldier language, they call him a dog and when a chief begs for a horse, he often does it under the figure of moccasins. Their war songs and others seem to have but little of either the Spirit or form of true poetry. A few words make a long song and, in general, their meaning is just the opposite of that naturally conveyed by the words. For example: nam ing a young man who has acted very bravely, killed an en emy and taken his Scalp, they say, you are a fool; you let the Chippewas strike you. And this is understood to be the highest form of eulogy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Language of the Dakota Or Sioux Indians (Classic Reprint)

The Language of the Dakota Or Sioux Indians (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Frederic Louis Otto Roehrig
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781528478564
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 22

Book Description
Excerpt from The Language of the Dakota or Sioux Indians Previously to his going to that out-of-the-way region he had happened to make himself in some measure acquainted with the languages of several of the Indian tribes, particularly with the Chippewa tongue and he then at once directed his attention to the language of those Indians in whose immediate neighborhood he was going to reside for a while, namely, the Sioux Nation, or Dakotas. It would take a whole volume to record his varied experience with those interesting tribes and the result of his ethnological and linguistic researches during the time he lived among them. On this occasion, however, he will content himself with presenting to the reader only a very few faint and cursory glimpses of merely such matters as may arise in his recollection, and as pertain to the language of these people. It is hoped that his elucidation of desultory topics of this nature will not prove altogether uninteresting to the ethnologist or philological inquirer. Book Description
Excerpt from Dakota Urgent requests were made of the Officials in every County in the Territory to send well authenticated descriptions of their respective neighborhoods for publication in this pamphlet. Comparatively few responses were received, and the Compiler has been compelled to obtain such information as was possible elsewhere. Mistakes may have been made in consequence, and injustice done in some instances. The only amends that can be made in such cases, is to correct them in any future edition of the work that may be published. A Book of Dakota Rhymes (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: B. W. Burleigh

ISBN: 9780484436595
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 142

Book Description
Excerpt from A Book of Dakota Rhymes The Rhymes comprising this little book have been gleaned from the farms and towns of South Dakota. New as is this state, there is a higher life in the breasts of even those who, far Zremoved from the great centres of culture and the blessings of an older and more highly developed region, brave the hardships of pio neer life These verses are an expression of that higher life that feels something deeper in nature and in the simple and often hard rela tions and conditions of western life. In making this collection - which has been possible only with the generous co-operation of the con tributors - and sending it out in book-form, the compilers feel that they are helping to preserve and make known, in a greater measure, a few samples of the literary fruit of this common wealth.
