The earliest identifiable ancestor was John Copeland, Sr. (1755-1832) who was born in Scotland or England and came to America in the 1750s. He settled in North Carolina and was the father of ten children. One of his children was Abner Copeland (1790-1874) who was born in North Carolina and married Margaret Morgan.
