Book Description
Effective peacebuilding in the aftermath of civil war usually requires the deep reform of security institutions, a process frequently known as security sector reform. Nearly every major donor, as well as a growing number of international organizations, supports the reform of security organizations in countries emerging from conflict and suffering high levels of violence. But how are reform strategies implemented? This collection of nine case studies examines the strategies, methods, and practices of the policy makers and practitioners engaged in security sector reform, uncovering the profound conceptual and practical challenges encountered in transforming policy aspiration into practice. This book was previously published as a special issue of Civil Wars.

Book Description
This discussion paper is based on a comprehensive report on the Mozambican legal system entitled Mozambique: Justice Sector and the Rule of Law (the main report). The main report is the product of a year-long, questionnaire-based research project that solicited views and information from judicial and government officials, civil society actors, academics, politicians, ordinary citizens and donors. It is one of a series of reports on Mozambique to be produced by the Africa Governance, Monitoring and Advocacy Project (AfriMAP), a project of the Open Society Foundation (OSF), and the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA). AfriMAP is also producing reports in South Africa, Malawi, Ghana and Senegal. The idea behind is to conduct audit of African governments' compliance with African and international standards on human rights and good governance, including the commitments made in national constitutions. The reports are intended to be a resource for practitioners and human rights activists in the countries concerned, and for those working in other African countries, to improve respect for human rights and democratic values on the continent.

Mother Africa, Father Marx
Author: Hilary Owen
Publisher: Bucknell University Press
ISBN: 9780838756577
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 292
Book Description
This book is the first work in the English language to discuss the participation of women writers in the narrative construction of Mozambican nationhood over the last half-century. Covering the rise of anti-colonial nationalism in the 1950s, the advent of the Marxist-Leninist Republic in the 1970s, the war that followed independence in the 1980s, and the transition to democracy and the neo-liberal economy in the 1990s, the volume focuses on four representative women writers who belong to distinct but overlapping periods and work in different genres. Dealing with Noemia de Sousa's poetry, Lina Magaia's testimonial writings, Lilia Momple's short fiction, and Paulina Chiziane's novels, the result is a close reading of the ways in which women have narrated and counter-narrated Mozambican nationhood to take account of the gendered power relations that traditionally underpin national community as imagined by men.
