The structure of Italian industry is characterized by a predominance of small sized companies and the presence of very few large companies. For a long time a conviction was shared among scholars and practitioners that the strength and safety of Italian industry were based on its industrial districts, that is, the system of interdependent and co-localized small companies which derive their competitive force from an effective and efficient division of labour. This book stresses the idea that a new, vital and promising phenomenon for the competitiveness of Italian industry is focused on mid-sized companies, and the systems of interconnected firms that form a constituent part of their business model. These companies, which originate largely from districts and other local production systems, are a strong entrepreneurial force complementing the districts that have characterized Italy and made Italian industry famous worldwide. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of these firms is provided in this book. The multidisciplinary, quantitative approach adopted by the author, enables her to "de-structure" the "canonical" idea of the ID and evaluate the normative value. Supported by multivariate and econometric analyses, she identifies four general types of ID each with different development paths, performances, inter-organizational relations, and regulatory rules and institutions. The results demonstrate that IDs on average achieve better static or dynamic economic performance than non-ID areas. The analysis also highlights critical points of rupture in the socio-economic equilibrium of IDs which may impair their future competitiveness and social sustainability. The author offers a critical appraisal of the organizational literature on IDs, claiming for caution in their depiction as "cooperative systems" and goes on to present the first steps towards a "microfoundation" of a theory on IDs.

While there has been much research on international business and cultural aspects, few researchers have taken into consideration the peculiarities of the Italian culture and their influence on internationalization. To test the hypothesis that Italian firms are influenced by the cultural dimensions identified by the GLOBE study, by the cultural distance indexes, and, eventually, by specific economic indexes, we have selected two dependent variables that express the most relevant modes through which firms enter a foreign country, namely foreign direct investments and trades. Through an in-depth assessment of secondary data mainly available online, we have ranked the countries according to the foreign direct investment and trade performances. Results have been compared with cultural scores inferred from GLOBE and with competitiveness indexes devised by Schwab (2019), UNDP (2020), and IMD (2019). A cultural distance comparison based on differences between Italy and other countries has been made. The outcomes show the Italian industry’s systemic weakness derived from the current competitiveness reports and record significant cultural gaps in relation to the top performer countries. Italy’s low score in GLOBE’s dimensions like performance orientation, future orientation, individualism, and uncertainty avoidance together with relatively high power distance put the country quite far from the cultural scores exhibited by the top performers. The results prove undoubtedly that the weakness of Italian internationalization strategy requires a new set of reforms aiming to increase the competitiveness of the country, resolve the eternal dilemma between North and South, and educate the future managers propelling a new international mentality in place of the “parochial” one typically affecting Italian Small and Medium Enterprises.

This paper examines the role of removing obstacles to competition in product markets in raising growth and productivity. Using firm-level data from Italy during 2003–13 and OECD measures of product market regulation, we estimate the effect of deregulation in network sectors on value added and productivity of firms in these sectors, as well as firms using these intermediates in their production processes. We find evidence of a significant positive impact. These effects are more pronounced in Italian provinces with more efficient public administration, underscoring the complementarities of advancing public administration and product market reforms simultaneously.
