European Armies and the Conduct of War
Author: Hew Strachan
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134898207
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 435
Book Description
Discussing the key issues of modern warfare, Hew Strachan’s work examines the theory and practice of land warfare in Europe since 1700. Looking at warfare in the context of social and political change, Dr. Strachan interprets his subject matter as widely as possible, and European Armies and the Conduct of War considers the roles of air power and the impact of the United States on European military developments. Through the eyes of the major theorists of the day, European Armies examines: * how the social and political influences which shape armies, also mould the attitude of those armies to warfare * the story of techicnal innovation * the mounting pace of industrialization and its impact of warfare. Recent military history has tended to focus on the relationship between armies and society and there has been much original research on the subject of the conduct of war. This book brings these approaches together, providing information and insight vital to the study of this fascinating era.

Author: Aidan J. Williams
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 024462027X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
Some years ago, Aidan Williams published two articles for Cross and Cockade, the Journal of the First World War Aviation Historical Society. The subject of both articles was the relatively little-known Engine Repair Shops of the Royal Flying Corps (later the Royal Air Force) in France during the Great War. Aidan has updated the information, added background stories, and included more photographs and extra details to introduce the history of the Engine Repair Shops to a whole new readership. In 1915, Scarborough-born Second Lieutenant Louis Frederick Rudston Fell joined the Engine Repair Shops as Assistant Equipment Officer; by 1919, he was Lieutenant Colonel L. F. R. Fell DSO OBE, and he continued to play an important role in British aero engine development up to the Second World War. In addition, Air Mechanic Thomas Boland's working day in the rotary engine section is described.

Death in the Air
Author: Wesley D. Archer
Publisher: Frontline
ISBN: 9781848328785
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
The typewritten script of a First World War pilot s diary with a large number of photographs was submitted to the publishers William Heinemann and published by them in 1933. Heinemann stated on the book s jacket that the diary contained no names, dates, or anything that could reveal the identity of the writer or the squadron in which he served. The publishers understood that the diarist was killed in action in 1918 and that it was in deference to the wishes of those who were close to him that his diary should be published. So remarkable were the photographs that their veracity was immediately questioned, but no proof of their authenticity or otherwise could be ascertained. It was not until 1983 that a collection of documents, photographs and artifacts was presented to the Smithsonian s National Air and Space Museum. Some of the photographs were recognized as being those of the mystery diarist and the truth was soon revealed. The author was Wesley Archer, an American with Canadian parents who served with the RFC in the First World War, and the photographs and diary had been faked."
