Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ... xviii. natural history. geology. The story of the earth's emit in the parish of Inchinnan, or its geology, has much of interest. Its older rocks are of the Carboniferous age. These rocks were laid down in a shallow sea. In this shallow sea, both to the north, south, and west, there arose volcanoes. The parish has from time to time been the scene of great earthquakes, by which its older rocks have been broken or faulted. By earthquakes, the complete rock structure of the parish shows two large breaks, which do more than cover the entire length of the parish. One of these faults (or breaks), can be traced in a north-westerly direction from the western side of the White Cart, in Abbey Parish, from a line with the Knock Hill past New Mains (a little to the south), to near the western boundary of it. A little to the south of New Mains, on the line of the fault, the Hurlet coal is got at 186 feet from the surface, while at a distance of under one mile (or 74 chains), in an east-north-east direction, to near Wrightsland, the same coal is sunk to a depth of 524 feet. Another fault extends from near the curling pond at Blythswood House, in a west-north-westerly direction past Luckingsford, to near South Barr. From this fault two minor faults extend in a south-easterly direction. One of these passes the farm of Bottom. The kind of the rocks as they lie in their natural positions, is as follows. From the surface downwards there are the following, viz.: --(1) surface matters and soil; (2) boulder clay or till; (3) lower black band ironstone; (4) dark-shale; (5) Johnstone clayband ironstone; (6) Hosie limestones; (7) Lillie's oil shale; (8) dark shale; (9) Hurlet limestone; and (10) Hurlet coal.
