Patterns of Reformation describes Oecolampadius' drastic scholarship and teaching about the Eucharist, particularly his support of Zwingli against Luther. Karlstadt was a pioneer of a later Puritanism who was to some extent a precursor of seventeenth-century English Puritan piety. He prefigured not only the radical Reformers but in a considerable degree the Reformed as distinct from the Lutheran tradition. His eucharistic teaching was radical in the extreme. Thomas Mÿntzer was a rebel who grows in historical stature. Spiritualist as he was, he was devoted to the Scriptures and a liturgiologist worthy of comparison with Cranmer between whose principles and his own there is a large measure of agreement. Dr. Rupp called him one of the most fascinating and tragic of God's delinquent children. Vadianus lived in St. Gall and as Burgomaster guided the Reforming movement into peaceful ways. He was a born student and historian, whose life has been preserved by the thumbnail sketches of the inspired gossip and friend, Kessler.

The fourteenth-century controversy between the Dominican Durandus of St Pourçain and his order plays a central role in explaining the later success of Thomism. Durandus's independent approach earned him two censures from Dominican authorities, as he appeared to jeopardize the order's sense of doctrinal identity. Through a close examination of the relevant theological issues, this book follows the course of the controversy to reveal the significant role which Franciscan theology played in the Dominican interpretation of Aquinas. This challenges the commonplace portrayal of early Thomists as a homogenous group, as it reveals the Franciscan contribution to the shaping of a Dominican intellectual tradition.

This essay newly interprets the rise of the individual within the Italian peninsula between 1180 and 1300. It follows the historical events and the cultural products that define the period keeping in mind that the creators were conscious of a tangible, real Christ in their midst. For it is the time when Jesus was known to be in the Eucharist as a carnal potentiality, as well as a time when Europeans on Crusade had reached his temporal abode. As Christ as neighbor became a consistent idea, the relationship towards that idea became one of accommodation, making subsequent worship a form of individualism. The later Renaissance was as much a specific reaction to a particular understanding of Christology within the cultural sphere as it was a reawakening of Classical ideals through a new paradigm of European selfhood outside of Christianity. Understood in this way, the Incarnation helped to produce an action based Christianity amenable to the needs of the Roman Church. The later insistence upon text and notions of personal conscience that identifies the Reformation, can now be seen as a true end to the Renaissance Christian praxis which began with the excitement over Christ among them.
