Tales from the Back Seat

Tales from the Back Seat PDF Author: David George
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN: 1643501704
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 110

Book Description
Tales from the Back Seat is an inaEUR"depth study by an author who grew up on the island of Grenada, where opportunities were few and far apart, and his transformation to the American way of life once in the United States. It is a wellaEUR"thoughtaEUR"out nonfiction that would make you want to read it repeatedly. It is filled with moments of sadness and joy, as well as periods of disbelief and shame. As an Uber driver, the author gave a frightening colloquy of the risks and challenges of the job, as well as the mistrust and difficulties he faced daily with the city law enforcement, notably the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) and the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The author also took a critical look at the practices of Uber and how it has hurt his business and that of his fellow colleagues. Tales from the Back Seat makes good reading for everyone, but I expect the individuals between the age group of twenty to sixtyaEUR"five years of age to find it very interesting. They are the ones who most frequently use Uber and would be interested in knowing what their fellow riders are doing or saying. This book would change the readers' perception not only of New York City life but that of the drivers as well. Readers would be surprised to know that for many of us, driving is a means to an end. In short, the author took a noaEUR"holdsaEUR"barred approach in writing this manuscript. He hopes that its content would leave you with your mouths wide open, as though you are gasping for air. It is a pageaEUR"turner. However, you should make time to read and digest it. I would advise you not to read it while crossing the streets.

Toilet

Toilet PDF Author: Harvey Molotch
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 0814761208
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
A sociological study of public restrooms So much happens in the public toilet that we never talk about. Finding the right door, waiting in line, and using the facilities are often undertaken with trepidation. Don’t touch anything. Try not to smell. Avoid eye contact. And for men, don’t look down or let your eyes stray. Even washing one’s hands are tied to anxieties of disgust and humiliation. And yet other things also happen in these spaces: babies are changed, conversations are had, make-up is applied, and notes are scrawled for posterity. Beyond these private issues, there are also real public concerns: problems of public access, ecological waste, and—in many parts of the world—sanitation crises. At public events, why are women constantly waiting in long lines but not men? Where do the homeless go when cities decide to close public sites? Should bathrooms become standardized to accommodate the disabled? Is it possible to create a unisex bathroom for transgendered people? In Toilet, noted sociologist Harvey Molotch and Laura Norén bring together twelve essays by urbanists, historians and cultural analysts (among others) to shed light on the public restroom. These noted scholars offer an assessment of our historical and contemporary practices, showing us the intricate mechanisms through which even the physical design of restrooms—the configurations of stalls, the number of urinals, the placement of sinks, and the continuing segregation of women’s and men’s bathrooms—reflect and sustain our cultural attitudes towards gender, class, and disability. Based on a broad range of conceptual, political, and down-to-earth viewpoints, the original essays in this volume show how the bathroom—as a practical matter—reveals competing visions of pollution, danger and distinction. Although what happens in the toilet usually stays in the toilet, this brilliant, revelatory, and often funny book aims to bring it all out into the open, proving that profound and meaningful history can be made even in the can. Contributors: Ruth Barcan, Irus Braverman, Mary Ann Case, Olga Gershenson, Clara Greed, Zena Kamash,Terry Kogan, Harvey Molotch, Laura Norén, Barbara Penner, Brian Reynolds, and David Serlin.

African & American

African & American PDF Author: Marilyn Halter
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 0814770487
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
Examines what it means to be African and American through the stories of recent West African immigrants African & American tells the story of the much overlooked experience of first and second generation West African immigrants and refugees in the United States during the last forty years. Interrogating the complex role of post-colonialism in the recent history of black America, Marilyn Halter and Violet Showers Johnson highlight the intricate patterns of emigrant work and family adaptation, the evolving global ties with Africa and Europe, and the translocal connections among the West African enclaves in the United States. Drawing on a rich variety of sources, including original interviews, personal narratives, cultural and historical analysis, and documentary and demographic evidence, African & American explores issues of cultural identity formation and socioeconomic incorporation among this new West African diaspora. Bringing the experiences of those of recent African ancestry from the periphery to the center of current debates in the fields of immigration, ethnic, and African American studies, Halter and Johnson examine the impact this community has had on the changing meaning of “African Americanness” and address the provocative question of whether West African immigrants are, indeed, becoming the newest African Americans.
