Book Description
I began composing this work several years ago after realizing there wasn't a practical guidebook on how to create a home garden in a tropical climate. Raised on a farm in the Eastern US. I didn't realize until years later, we'd lived an organic, natural lifestyle. During my life, I've lived and worked in many tropical and sub-tropical areas: the Caribbean, Central America, Hawaii, Sri Lanka, and SE Asia. I always had a home garden for fresh herbs and vegetables, and fruit trees. Initially, information came from acquaintances, neighbors, and friends. Usually, useful information only came when a garden disaster struck. When luck smiled, with a good crop, I never asked questions. I studied grow box construction and attended every government and agri-business course on specific fruit and vegetable courses that I could attend. I inquired at libraries, agri-shops, government offices, and the Internet to locate free gardening lessons. These courses provided knowledge on using garden chemicals safely. Over the years since the original Caribbean Home Garden Guide was published, I learned about many new, different, incredible healthy vegetables, roots, and fruits and more time-proven, common sense gardening techniques to get the most from garden labor. Most importantly, I never stopped loving the garden. It has become my best money saving hobby that helps me stay in good health in retirement. Whether in heat or mud, the process of growing my own food directed me to other questions and more answers. Wiser, more experienced garden people and the Internet has been the best information sources for the majority of the crops.

Gardening in the Caribbean

Gardening in the Caribbean PDF Author: Iris Bannochie
Publisher: MacMillan Education, Limited
ISBN:
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
The warm climate and generous rainfall of the Caribbean islands, together with rich soils, provide excellent conditions for growing a great variety of plant life. Columbus discovered that the indigenous peoples of the region were successfully growing an extensive range of plants and crops, and successive settlers of many cultures have introduced their familiar species. There are few places in the world with as great a diversity of plants as found in today`s Caribbean. This book tells the reader how to acheive the best results by learning more about the plants and how to grow them in particular situations. It covers all aspects of Caribbean and tropical gardening. It discusses climate, soils, drainage and irrigation, feeding, pruning and propagation. A chapter on landscape introduces the basics of garden design, and shows what to grow where. The section on plant competitors focuses on pest, disease and weed control in a tropical context. Iris Bannochie won the Gold Medal on three occasions at the Chelsea Flower Show in London, and was awarded the Gold Vietch Memorial Medal by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1977 for her contribution to tropical horticulture.

Perennial Vegetables

Perennial Vegetables PDF Author: Eric Toensmeier
Publisher: Chelsea Green Publishing
ISBN: 1931498407
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
There is a fantastic array of vegetables you can grow in your garden, and not all of them are annuals. In Perennial Vegetables the adventurous gardener will find information, tips, and sound advice on less common edibles that will make any garden a perpetual, low-maintenance source of food. Imagine growing vegetables that require just about the same amount of care as the flowers in your perennial beds and borders--no annual tilling and potting and planting. They thrive and produce abundant and nutritious crops throughout the season. It sounds too good to be true, but in Perennial Vegetables author and plant specialist Eric Toensmeier (Edible Forest Gardens) introduces gardeners to a world of little-known and wholly underappreciated plants. Ranging beyond the usual suspects (asparagus, rhubarb, and artichoke) to include such "minor" crops as ground cherry and ramps (both of which have found their way onto exclusive restaurant menus) and the much sought after, anti-oxidant-rich wolfberry (also known as goji berries), Toensmeier explains how to raise, tend, harvest, and cook with plants that yield great crops and satisfaction. Perennial vegetables are perfect as part of an edible landscape plan or permaculture garden. Profiling more than 100 species, illustrated with dozens of color photographs and illustrations, and filled with valuable growing tips, recipes, and resources, Perennial Vegetables is a groundbreaking and ground-healing book that will open the eyes of gardeners everywhere to the exciting world of edible perennials.
