Book Description
Excerpt from The Book of Church Law As for the endowments by which the clergy of the Church are maintained, and its divine service provided for, they have not been bestowed by the State out of the public exchequer, but have mostly been derived from money or land offered for the purpose by sovereigns, noble men, and other persons, in their private capacity, and out of their private possessions.1 A very large amount of the property thus given was alienated from religious to secular uses in the time of the Tudors, and this alienation was confirmed by Act of Parliament; but no corresponding endowment of the clergy by Act of Parliament is to be found. Book Description
Excerpt from Civil Church Law Note. - Under the general title of Civil Church Law it is purposed to edit a series of digests presenting the statute law affecting religious organizations as it is being developed in the American commonwealths. Such law is not now easily accessible to the great body of church people, yet with the rapid development of church as one of the great institutions of American society there is more and more use for it. Again, the time has passed when even the chief features of the civil church law of all the commonwealths could with convenience be presented in a single volume, and those bearing church responsibilities generally need to know only the law directly defining their duties and rights. American statute legislation relating to ecclesiastical organization is developing rapidly. It is evident that we are in the midst of a general movement for the broader introduction of purely ecclesiastical elements into the civil law, creating not indeed a civil establishment of religion, but more and more of a legal establishment of church. In order to set forth this body of law as it develops, in the form best adapted to serve the interests of the whole body of church people, the plan of a series of State digests has been adopted. The type for these digests will be kept standing, and the changes in the law of each State will be presented annually. To extend the benefit of this watch on legislation for churches to the churches themselves it has been arranged that subscribers to any State digest shall receive free of charge for a period of three years after their subscription copy of all further legislation affecting religious organizations. If, however, a general revision of the law should be effected during such a period, the editor reserves the right to bring out another edition. Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Canon Law Moreover, sin is sometimes the outcome of general weakness in face of strong temptation, and requires the kindly help of others to be successfully overcome; whilst in other cases sin is wilful, and to tolerate it is to do harm to all the rest. Canon Law, which is the code of rules elaborated by the collective wisdom of the past under the guidance of the Holy Ghost, endeavours to show within the range of cases which come under its cogni sance, how truth may be elicited from the observed facts, and how justice may be combined with mercy, so that what is right and equal may be done between each indi vidual member and the whole Body of the Church. Book Description
Excerpt from The Law of the Church: A Cyclopaedia of Canon Law for English-Speaking Countries Law and life are correlative terms. As God is the Author of life, so is He the Author of law By Me kings reign, and lawgivers decree just things (prov. Viii. This general truth is particularly seen in that Divine society, the mystical Body of Jesus Christ, which is quickened by the ever abiding presence-oi the Holy Ghost, Himself the Lord and Life-giver. From the earliest days of the Church, law has existed as essential to her existence. The keys of the kingdom, symbols of power, were of Old given to one who was hidden to confirm his brethren and to feed the flock. This charge to Blessed Peter was not only to teach infallibly, but also to govern with Divine authority the Church over which he was set as head. Thus, we see him, after the Ascension, standing up in the midst of the disciples and pre siding over the election of Matthias, who was numbered with the eleven. The Prince of the Apostles exercised jurisdiction by that first sermon on the Day of Pentecost when he preached Jesus of Nazareth, a Man approved of God as both Lord and Christ; and he opened the Church by baptism on that same day to 'about three thousand souls.' The Roman Catholic Church

The Roman Catholic Church PDF Author: Thomas Edward Watson

Book Description
Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church: Its Law and Its Literature True, some of the Protestant churches are accumulating far more property, than is good for the spiritual welfare. They imitate the bad example of the Romanists, in building cathedrals which smack too much of mere human pride. The expensive church. Requires the Rich Man, and the Rich Man takes the life out of the church. The Baptist preacher cannot denounce Rockefeller's Colorado infamies, and his Standard Oil criminalities, when Rockefeller is sitting on a front bench ready to pour Standard Oil and Coal Trust money into the churchs yawning treasury. A corporation like Trinity Church, in New York, is a national scandal. The State should exert her sovereign powers, under the law of Eminent Domain, and take over all such vast and unnecessary church properties; and, after duly providing funds for the continuance of strictly religious work, should apply the surplus to public education, mothers' pensions, and similar charities.
