Excerpt from The Birds of London A few words upon the various localities mentioned in the following pages may, perhaps, not be out of place here, especially as such a small proportion of Lon doners are at all well acquainted with the said locali ties, and even those that are will probably pardon me this slight digression. To begin then in the east, the farthest point mentioned is Dagenham Lake. This is situated some four miles beyond Barking and on the north side of the Thames, with which it was until re cently connected. It is a deep and clear sheet of water, and is fully a mile in length by perhaps one sixth of a mile in breadth at the widest part. The edge of the water is fringed with dense beds of reeds and sedges, forming a cover for water-fowl, which, however, are not abundant, owing no doubt to the lake being so much frequented by fishermen and gunners. Nevertheless, in the early morning, particu larly in the latter part of the year, a few wild ducks of several species may be seen, while the wary and artful moor-hen is always about. Excerpt from Bird Life in England IN these pages I have attempted to give a somewhat uncon ventional view of bird life in England and her sister kingdoms to north and west. The naturalist may smile at a monograph so incomplete as this, but in Yarrel, Morris, Gould, Grey, and a score of others, he will find exhaustive authors who have gone with infinite care and pains through the Whole list of British birds and epitomized each. No attempt of this sort has been made here. There are, to begin with, more than three hundred birds nesting with greater or lesser frequency in our islands, and even at such modest allotment as two pages to each, we should have at once a bulky volume of six hundred pages. But the greater part of these wild fowl of meadow and marsh are the curator's birds alone, and lovers of country side and the life of copse and dingle can only hope to meet with but a very much reduced selection from the formidable list which professors and students have put together. Excerpt from Birds of the British Empire AS something like 5000 species of birds - about half the number known to exist in the habitable globe - are to be found in the dominions of our Queen, it must be obvious that the briefest description of them could not be included within the compass of a small volume like the present one, as its size is necessarily restricted by the limits imposed upon each book in the series of the imperial library. Nevertheless, it is hoped that the present glance at a big subject will prove interesting and valuable to many people. The number of persons interested in birds is unquestion ably enormous but the proportion is probably much smaller of those who require an exhaustive treatise carried out with cosmopolitan comprehensiveness and, in any case, the expense of such a work would be a bar to a wide sale.
