The bell had taken so many: Old Man Jenkins, found in the town square with his eyes staring blankly at the sky; little Alice, who had ventured into the woods and never returned alive; and most recently, Pastor Simmons, discovered slumped over his pulpit, his Bible open to the passage about the four horsemen of the apocalypse. The villagers huddled in their homes, fear gripping their hearts as they waited for the inevitable. And then, as suddenly as it had started, the bell fell silent once more.
