Risky Chances, the eighth installment of The Beadle Files, opens with LC Beadle in Buffalo meeting with a supposed informant, but soon enough determines that he’s been snookered. A pair of ruffians warn him that Cody Fralick will very shortly be greeted by the Grim Reaper, then they proceed to beat the journalist until he is smothered into unconsciousness. The narrative is crisp and fast-paced, set mostly in Buffalo, New York—there are twists and turns that take the reader on a train trip from Colorado to the Queen City. A pair of mysterious female characters bring vivid memories from the past that in different ways rattle both Avis Lahay and Tatiyana Baglio. Meanwhile Jack Whistler continues to be the sly and crafty master of information, even as he is visited by shadowy wheelers and dealers. Ziggy Alder and Sara Mulder continue their adventurous escapades on the trail to Creede, where he hopes to find a kinsman’s grave, as well as yearns to meet anyone who knew him who could tell some Uncle Whitey stories. Ziggy chatters constantly, regaling Sara with tall tales from his past, which are so entertaining that she seems to always want to hear another one.

Sacred Shadows and Latent Light

Sacred Shadows and Latent Light PDF Author: Dustin Lawrence Lovell

ISBN: 1666733326
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 308

Book Description
When college students Elliot Fleming and Vesta Lloyd agree to join English Professor Rydar Colson’s production of Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part 1 and Part 2, they do not know what to expect. Sacred Shadows and Latent Light follows Elliot and Vesta as they prepare for what they assume will be little more than an enriching extracurricular challenge. However, when student reporter Ermine Jackson goes beyond his journalism professor’s instruction to lobby the university for a second director, he initiates a campaign to cancel the plays and remove Shakespeare from the university curriculum—and Colson from campus. Between Colson’s production and Jackson’s crusade, the campus steadily divides, leading to unexpected allegiances, betrayals, questionable accusations, and threats of physical violence. Throughout their time admiring, questioning, resenting, and defending Colson and his production, the characters discover when and how to stand up for their convictions, all the while examining different views on the extent of free speech, the place of the canon in higher academia, the safety and representation of women in society, the growth of “cancel culture” on a changing university campus, and how much is truly involved in what and how one reads.

The Challenge of Crime in a Free Society

The Challenge of Crime in a Free Society PDF Author: United States. President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Crime
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
This report of the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice -- established by President Lyndon Johnson on July 23, 1965 -- addresses the causes of crime and delinquency and recommends how to prevent crime and delinquency and improve law enforcement and the administration of criminal justice. In developing its findings and recommendations, the Commission held three national conferences, conducted five national surveys, held hundreds of meetings, and interviewed tens of thousands of individuals. Separate chapters of this report discuss crime in America, juvenile delinquency, the police, the courts, corrections, organized crime, narcotics and drug abuse, drunkenness offenses, gun control, science and technology, and research as an instrument for reform. Significant data were generated by the Commission's National Survey of Criminal Victims, the first of its kind conducted on such a scope. The survey found that not only do Americans experience far more crime than they report to the police, but they talk about crime and the reports of crime engender such fear among citizens that the basic quality of life of many Americans has eroded. The core conclusion of the Commission, however, is that a significant reduction in crime can be achieved if the Commission's recommendations (some 200) are implemented. The recommendations call for a cooperative attack on crime by the Federal Government, the States, the counties, the cities, civic organizations, religious institutions, business groups, and individual citizens. They propose basic changes in the operations of police, schools, prosecutors, employment agencies, defenders, social workers, prisons, housing authorities, and probation and parole officers.
