Book Description
Excerpt from The Baron Dekalb: Address Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen: It is patriotic, instructive and inspiring to recall our country's heroic past and to review the lives, the characters and the services of the heroes who have illustrated, by their valor and self-abnegation, the proudest pages of American history. We owe to the memories of all who fell in the long and desperate struggle of the Colonies for Independence the sacred duty of repeating and perpetuating the story of their sacrifices and achievements and commemorating their love of liberty. Though more than a century has rolled over their graves their examples, written in blood and consecrated by death, remain to guide, encourage and inspire us and those who will come after us. It is not enough that enduring memorials should attest our gratitude; we should tell again and again to each other and to mankind how they labored, fought and died that this nation might exist and that the inestimable blessings of free government might be the priceless heritage of this great people. Book Description
DeKalb was originally known as Huntley's Grove, named after Russell Huntley, an early settler who was one of its founders. The area had also been known as Buena Vista and DeKalb Center, before settling on the name DeKalb in 1881. The name was derived from Baron Johann DeKalb (1721-1780), a German soldier who served under Washington at Valley Forge and died a Revolutionary War hero. Three august DeKalb men are credited with the invention of barbed wire and began manufacturing it in 1873. Today DeKalb is a world leader in hybrid seed development and genetic research, as well as the home of Northern Illinois University.

Book Description
Johann von Robais, Baron de Kalb (June 19, 1721 - August 19, 1780), born Johann Kalb, was a Franconian-French military officer who served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and was mortally wounded while fighting the British Army during the Battle of Camden. For professionals of a European country to graft themselves to the culture of another was not so unusual in the 18th century, whether in the arts, government, or the military, but de Kalb was distinctly unique from a young age as a German with a strong Francophile bent.
