Book Description
Colonial warfare on the Dark Continent The British Empire rapidly spread it's influence throughout the globe during the nineteenth century. Predictably these intrusions rarely found favour with the indigenous populations and so, inevitably, the imperial interests of power and commerce were reinforced by the imposition of military and naval might courtesy of the British Army and the Royal Navy. British interests in West Africa proved to be no exception to the rule and the so called 'Ashanti Wars' were fought with varying degrees of savagery and through eight campaigns from 1806 until 1900. This book is about the Third Anglo-Ashanti War which was fought during 1873-74. Garnet Wolseley, commanding a force of British, West Indian and local forces marched against the Ashanti who had invaded British territory. The campaign gained particular notoriety because it occurred during the golden age of newspaper correspondents and was covered by both G. A. Henty and Henry Morton Stanley. It made Wolseley's reputation and he became a household name. The conflict was made singular by the nature of the terrain-often thick jungle-across which it was fought and by it's exotic protagonists and this makes it a subject of particular interest for students of the colonial wars in the Victorian era. The outcome of the war was, perhaps, predictable and the British both occupied the enemy capital Kumasi and then burnt it down as an object lesson. This book is particularly useful because the author was an eyewitness to the storming of Amoaful by the Black Watch, the storming of Ordahsu by the Rifle Brigade and the fall of the capital. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Not illustrated. 1874 edition. Excerpt: ...belonged to Abrakrampa. He said that when Amanquatia was on his way to the coast he had passed near that village, and had left it alone; but as its inhabitants (who belonged to the Arbra tribe) had troubled him much in his march, and killed many of his men, he had sworn a great oath that he would attack it on his return. I determined to get into the village if I could, but had no right to ask for an escort: and therefore thought it best to make my attempt under cover of the night. Besides, no time was to be lost. As my men knew the village and its secret paths, I took it for granted they would get me safe in, somehow or other; and when I told them to get ready by 10 P.m. to go to Abrakrampa, they did not make any objection. At 9.30 I went over to Government House to ask the General whether I could take anything for him to Abrakrampa, for I supposed that the regular communications were closed. The Head-Quarters' mess were at dessert, and Charteris came out into the passage. When I told him my intention, he said, 'I wouldn't go if I were you, ' and then asked me in. The dining-room presented a splendid appearance. It was always 'guest-night' at Government House. All the officers were in full dress, and almost all wore a different uniform. There were the Guards, the Artillery, the Engineers, the Rifles, and other regiments. Then the table itself was rich in colour, with golden bananas, deep green melons, the wax-lights shining through the decanters and casting rosy reflections on the shining mahogany; for that abomination of modern desserts, the table-cloth, had been removed. I sat down for a few moments, received two bottles of champagne for Major Russell's mess at Abrakrampa, and then rose to go. As I went down the stone steps outside, I..

Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the Ashantee Campaign As five other books on the Ashantee War have been announced or have already ap peared, the preface to a work on that subject ought to be apologetic and my apology for writing on an over-written subject is this, that it was my fortune to see more fighting than any one else in the Expedition, excepting a few officers in the native regiments. More over no other writer, military or civil, witnessed either of these three events - the storming of Amoaful by the Black Watch the storming of Ordahsu by the Ri e Brigade; or the taking of Coomassie by Sir Archibald Alison and.
