Book Description
Excerpt from The Water Resources of Illinois The glacial deposits yield such an abundance of good water that over a large part of the State but few wells have gone below these deposits. Where the drift is thin, wells have entered the rock. In northern and western Illinois much prospecting for artesian water has been done. The logs of wells are seldom sufficiently full or reliable to warrant publication, and the writer has had very little opportunity to examine well drillings. From many of the wells, however, information of more or less value has been Obtained which throws light upon the character and availability of such water. No investigation of the water power of the streams has been under taken further than the collocation of results obtained by others; but the use of streams as sources for city water supply has been investi gated, and analyses of waters from this source, as well as from other sources, have been obtained. Book Description
Excerpt from The Quality of the Surface Waters of Illinois The Illinois State Water Survey, organized in 1895, has made a great many analyses of Illinois waters, but most of them have been for the purpose of determining the purity of waters for domestic use. Many analyses of the mineral content of waters have been made by the State Water Survey, but these are mainly of well waters. The railroads of the State have made many partial analyses of all sorts of waters in their efforts to obtain for locomotive boilers those that are least injurious. The samples of the river waters are selected usually at random or in the driest seasons. Thus, with a very large number of partial analyses available, it was not possible to learn definitely just what might be expected in the way of water at any point on any river in the State. Book Description

Classification of a drainage system may be based upon various components of this morphological pattern. Horton (1945) devised one such classification based upon stream branching. His system was later modified by Strahler (1954, In the Horton Strahler system, streams which received no tributaries were called order 1 streams.
