Miscellaneous Collection of Material Compiled by William Cook Chiefly Relating to Thomas Arden and His Murder

Miscellaneous Collection of Material Compiled by William Cook Chiefly Relating to Thomas Arden and His Murder PDF Author: William Shakespeare
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Arden of Feversham
Languages : en
Pages : 98

Book Description
A synopsis of the play Arden of Feversham (1592, etc.), descriptions of the persons concerned in the tragedy , a printed chap-book (ca. 1720, title page wanting), and other matter are included. Not apparently related to Arden are some extracts from Hamlet, three pages of extracts from Addison's Cato, and a chap-book story of Lord Cheyne and Lord Shorland (part of the Arden chap-book). The name of William Cook appears on the cover and twice inside, where the dates 1750 and 1751 are written. But on the verso of leaf 25 an account of Thomas Arden appears to be drawn from E. Jacob's reprint of the play (London, 1770), p. iv; and on the recto of leaf 25 the authorship of the play is attributed to Shakespeare, an attribution generally credited to Jacob (op.cit.).

Anecdotal Shakespeare

Anecdotal Shakespeare PDF Author: Paul Menzer
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1472576187
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 281

Book Description
Shakespeare's four-hundred-year performance history is full of anecdotes – ribald, trivial, frequently funny, sometimes disturbing, and always but loosely allegiant to fact. Such anecdotes are nevertheless a vital index to the ways that Shakespeare's plays have generated meaning across varied times and in varied places. Furthermore, particular plays have produced particular anecdotes – stories of a real skull in Hamlet, superstitions about the name Macbeth, toga troubles in Julius Caesar – and therefore express something embedded in the plays they attend. Anecdotes constitute then not just a vital component of a play's performance history but a form of vernacular criticism by the personnel most intimately involved in their production: actors. These anecdotes are therefore every bit as responsive to and expressive of a play's meanings across time as the equally rich history of Shakespearean criticism or indeed the very performances these anecdotes treat. Anecdotal Shakespeare provides a history of post-Renaissance Shakespeare and performance, one not based in fact but no less full of truth.
