Book Description
Excerpt from The Analysis of Sentences Explained and Systematised: After the Plan of Becker's German Grammar The publication of this little work has been suggested, and in a sense necessitated by a deficiency experienced in the course of unofficial duties, as an Inspector of Schools. This deficiency was most felt in the collective examinations of Pupil Teachers, where, beyond the ordinary modes of parsing, I found it almost impossible to give out any questions on Syntax and the analysis of sentences, to which a common meaning was attached by the pupils assembled, or any number of distinct answers returned. The capacity of parsing individual words with accuracy is now expected of all the more advanced scholars in every well conducted school. It has not yet, however, been well understood that this is but the Alphabet of Grammar; and that the mental advantage to he derived from the science can only be secured, by leading the pupil to a further analysis of language, of which the separate words give us merely the elements. To guide the pupil through such a course of grammatical analysis is the object I have had in view in the following pages ; which, although brief, will he found to contain general principles that may be expanded by the intelligent teacher into innumerable examples and illustrations. An Annotated Bibliography of Nineteenth-Century Grammars of English
Author: Manfred Görlach
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027283885
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 406
Book Description
In the 19th century, education became accessible to much wider circles of society in a great number and variety of schools and the teaching of grammar came to be obligatory from 1870/72 with the advent of general education. Whereas these general trends of the 19th century are well-known to scholars working in different disciplines of social history, and the history of education in particular, it is still true that major sections of the evidence are largely uncollected. This is especially so for school books: there is virtually a gap between the 18th century and the present grammatical tradition. This bibliography lists some 1930 works on English grammar published in the 19th century, mainly in Britain and the US, half of which are accompanied by short descriptions of their physical make-up, content and affiliation.

Book Description
Over the past few decades, the book series Linguistische Arbeiten [Linguistic Studies], comprising over 500 volumes, has made a significant contribution to the development of linguistic theory both in Germany and internationally. The series will continue to deliver new impulses for research and maintain the central insight of linguistics that progress can only be made in acquiring new knowledge about human languages both synchronically and diachronically by closely combining empirical and theoretical analyses. To this end, we invite submission of high-quality linguistic studies from all the central areas of general linguistics and the linguistics of individual languages which address topical questions, discuss new data and advance the development of linguistic theory.
