Book Description
Excerpt from The American Naturalist, 1908, Vol. 42: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Advancement of the Biological Sciences, With Special References to the Factors of Evolution There is some indication that the delay in the forma tion of the new leg in the frog is due to conditions exist ing in the bones or muscles and, as I have pointed out,1 it is significant to find that in the vertebrates the loss of power to regenerate a limb appears where cartilage has been changed to bone. The result is not however due directly to the ossification, since the new material is derived from the periosteum and not from differentiated tissue. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
