In 1951, when cattle were scarce but hogs more plentiful, Choice steers sold at Chicago for $36 per 100 pounds. Barrows and gilts brought scarcely $21 - 42 percent less. Now, with cattle prices having declined for 2 years, the relation is opposite. Prices of barrows and gilts were higher than Choice steers from late April through July.
