Nearly all the irrigation is the open-ditch type; mechanical sprinkler systems are rare. Most of the irrigated area is located in the east-central plains area through which the Tisza River flows. In line with the state's explicit intention to intensify agriculture, the area under irrigation is planned to increase appreciably by 1965.
