Languages : en
Pages : 648

Book Description
The development of Afrikaans is investigated within its sociohistorical context from the beginnings of the Afrikaans speech community in the 17th century to the present. Language contact in the loose and heterogeneous early Cape society gave rise to a divergent variety of Dutch later to be named Afrikaans. There was extensive borrowing as well as creolisation due to the strong presence of foreigners who had to acquire Dutch rapidly and under adverse social conditions. Changes in the linguistic core and functions of Afrikaans are set forth in a number of chapters.

Finding Afrikaans

Finding Afrikaans PDF Author: Christo van Rensburg
Publisher: Penguin Random House South Africa
ISBN: 079938478X
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
A new book on Afrikaans's African origins Finding Afrikaans, a brand-new book by Christo van Rensburg, is now available. Where did Afrikaans begin? Who spoke Afrikaans first? Was the Cape really Dutch? How did the Khoi and the Portuguese trade with each other? What role did slaves play in the origin of Afrikaans? What is the influence of townships in Afrikaans? How did the various treks into the heart of the country affect Afrikaans? The language contact that had followed, even the fear of language contact, is one of Afrikaans's important stories. Writing in the Afrikaans language began in different, and interesting, ways, with strong influences from the Islam. Afrikaans's standardisation is the source of many different and divergent stories. Finding Afrikaans is also available in Afrikaans as Van Afrikaans gepraat. These books were made possible by a generous donation from the Afrikaanse Taalraad (ATR). They coproduced by Malan Media and LAPA Publishers. LAPA will be marketing and distributing the books. Dr. Willa Boezak said about Van Rensburg’s previous book: "It had changed my life. It had turned me into a language activist. " The ATR, the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument and the Heritage Foundation are joining forces to market the books. These books will also feature regularly at language seminars run by the ATKV and DAK. In the Netherlands there is a huge great interest in the book, and this English translation has created an interest among sociologists from different continents.

The Black and White Rainbow

The Black and White Rainbow PDF Author: Carolyn Holmes
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 0472127179
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
Nation-building imperatives compel citizens to focus on what makes them similar and what binds them together, forgetting what makes them different. Democratic institution building, on the other hand, requires fostering opposition through conducting multiparty elections and encouraging debate. Leaders of democratic factions, like parties or interest groups, can consolidate their power by emphasizing difference. But when held in tension, these two impulses—toward remembering difference and forgetting it, between focusing on unity and encouraging division—are mutually constitutive of sustainable democracy. Based on ethnographic and interview-based fieldwork conducted in 2012–13, The Black and White Rainbow: Reconciliation, Opposition, and Nation-Building in Democratic South Africa explores various themes of nation- and democracy-building, including the emotional and banal content of symbols of the post-apartheid state, the ways that gender and race condition nascent nationalism, the public performance of nationalism and other group-based identities, integration and sharing of space, language diversity, and the role of democratic functioning including party politics and modes of opposition. Each of these thematic chapters aims to explicate a feature of the multifaceted nature of identity-building, and link the South African case to broader literatures on both nationalism and democracy.

Whiteness Afrikaans Afrikaners

Whiteness Afrikaans Afrikaners PDF Author: MISTRA
Publisher: MISTRA
ISBN: 063992381X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 186

Book Description
South Africa has been reeling under the recent blows of an apparent resurgence of crude public manifestations of racism and a hardening of attitudes on both sides of the racial divide. To probe this topic as it relates to white South Africans, Afrikaans and Afrikaners, MISTRA, in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) and the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS), convened a round-table discussion. The discourse was rigorous. This volume comprises the varied and thought-provoking presentations from that event, including a keynote address by former president Kgalema Motlanthe, inputs from Melissa Steyn, Andries Nel, Mary Burton, Christi van der Westhuizen, Lynette Steenveld, Bobby Godsell, Dirk Hermann (of Solidarity), Ernst Roets (of Afriforum), Xhanti Payi, Mathatha Tsedu, Pieter Duvenage, Hein Willemse and Nico Koopman, and closing remarks by Achille Mbembe and Mathews Phosa. It deals with a range of issues around "whiteness" in general and delves into the place of Afrikaners and the Afrikaans language in democratic South Africa, demonstrating that there is no homogeneity of views on these topics among white South Africans overall and Afrikaners in particular. In fact, in these pages, one finds a multifaceted effort to scrub energetically at the boundaries that apartheid imposed on all South Africans in different ways.
