Book Description
Photography. Art. RIVIERA documents the eerie fragments of existence left behind in one city. John Brian King photographed RIVIERA from 2016 to 2018 in Palm Springs, California, and its surroundings; a full-time resident at the time, he used a cheap instant film camera to give his photographs a unique, washed-out, hazy aesthetic. King depicts a city that is frozen in a visually arresting state of decline, cataloguing the totems of an absurd civilization. "I wanted to photograph the Palm Springs that I lived in and interacted with every single day," King writes, "the beautiful, the mundane, the ugly, the hot desolate nature of Coachella Valley. I wasn't interested in the tourism-board view of Palm Springs, of martinis by the swimming pool and candy-colored, Instagram-ready desert art installations. I was interested in the debris--architectural and natural--left behind by generations of people who lived in or visited Palm Springs to escape, to exist, to die."

Book Description
Memory Lane was never so personal and vibrant as in Kathy "Cissy" Garver's Family Affair Scrapbook. Each page is a pictorial feast for fans of the show and lovers of nostalgia. Family Affair was a breakthrough show depicting a successful bachelor uncle who takes on the raising of his brother's orphan children, Cissy, Buffy and Jody. This is not the life his Gentleman's Gentleman, the Stodgy Mr. French signed up for, but after many adventures and life lessons learned, they become one of television's all-time favorite families. You will see many notable guest stars, including familiar children's faces, many of whom grew up to have major careers. 1966-1971 was a significant time in TV history as the Country strived to hold on to its innocence. The beloved Davis Family made it that much easier for those television fans to believe that we could solve even the greatest problems with love, understanding, and in less than thirty minutes.

Glamour Road

Glamour Road PDF Author: Tom Dolle
Publisher: Schiffer Publishing
ISBN: 9780764363900

Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
This highly visual book explores the seldom-told story of how glamour, fashion, design, and styling became the main focus of automotive marketing from the postwar 1940s through the 1970s. With the expansion of the American suburbs after WWII, women suddenly needed cars of their own. By adopting the fashion industry's yearly model changes, as well as hiring many designers and stylists from the fashion industry, the automobile industry made a direct appeal to the rising sophistication and influence of women. By perfecting the fashion-centric concept of planned obsolescence, it became the dominant economic engine of American postwar prosperity. The dramatic photography, elegant fashion, and use of color and materials in midcentury automotive marketing created a groundswell of demand for new cars. Much of the marketing imagery of the period hasn't been published since it first came out, and this book features some of the best.

Midnight Modern

Midnight Modern PDF Author: Tom Blachford
Publisher: powerHouse Books
ISBN: 9781576878347
Category : Photography

Book Description
Midnight Modern brings into focus a view of Palm Springs and its internationally renowned modernist houses never before shown, shot entirely by the light of the full moon. Created over the course of three years by Australian photographer Tom Blachford, the surreal images function as portals in time, with the homes, cars, and beautiful scenery appearing almost exactly as it all did 60 years ago. The crisp moonlight adds a new dimension to the famous mecca of desert modernism and shows a contrasting side of a town famous for its sunshine, cocktails, and hedonism. Working closely with the Palm Springs community, Blachford gained remarkable access to some of the most coveted architectural jewels in the area, including the Kaufmann Desert House, Edris House, Frey House II, Frank Sinatra Twin Palms Estate, and dozens of restored Alexander tract homes in the valley. Blachford's work builds on the famous documentary and lifestyle approaches of Julius Shulman and Slim Aarons, but injects a signature mystery. His cinematic aesthetic acts as a stage for an untold narrative, inviting the viewer to script their own drama going on behind the walls of these historic homes. This original, lush work is a rich contribution to the record for those midcentury architecture and design lovers fascinated by Palm Springs.

Palm Springs

Book Description
Nestled beneath the San Jacinto Mountains in an oasis of palm trees is a mineral hot springs. For thousands of years, this was the winter home of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the original inhabitants of this harsh desert region. A U.S. government survey party discovered the spring in 1853 and identified the area located at the base of "two bunches of palms." In 1884, Judge John McCallum of San Francisco purchased land near the springs for $800 and built the first adobe structure, which still stands today. Stage lines and railroads provided transportation through the area, bringing in visitors year-round. Dr. Welwood Murray built the first Palm Springs Hotel, and in 1909, Nellie Coffman built The Desert Inn, which would become famous as a tourist attraction. This was the beginning of the area's major industry. Today Palm Springs is still a destination for visitors throughout the year and home to a growing population of permanent residents.
